Sue Perkins apologises for ‘s****y mistake’ after misgendering Emma D’Arcy

Sue Perkins has apologised for accidentally misgendering House of the Dragon star Emma D’Arcy.

Sue, 54, was attending the premiere of the second season of the show in London on Monday (June 10), alongside a slew of other famous faces. It was during her stint on the red carpet as a host that she made her faux pas, triggering a slew of abuse.

Speaking about Emma, who identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, Sue accidentally referred to them as “she”. However, former Doctor Who lead actor Matt Smith – with whom she was interviewing – was quick to address the mishap, and added: “Aren’t they brilliant?”

One fan wrote: “Bowing down to Matt who quite rightly used Emma’s pronouns, absolute King of a man. Want to give Sue the benefit of the doubt, an error – Sue was one of the first queer women that I ever saw on daytime British TV, back when it wasn’t accepted to do so – she’s one of us.”

A second user added: “The way [Matt] looked [Sue] dead in the face and said, ‘They…’ multiple times is *chefs kiss*.” Whilst a third penned: “This is Sue Perkins as well, she used to be so good with this s**t!”

Following the debacle, Sue took to Twitter, now known as X, to apologise formally for accidentally misgendering them. In a post she shared, she explained that it was a “s****y mistake” and that she had been pulled in several directions all at once.

“Had loads of stuff going on in my earpiece and so wasn’t as focused as I should have been,” she clarified. “No excuses though.

“These things matter and I feel terrible about it. Am a massive fan of their work and would never want to be disrespectful,” Sue added, before signing off with a kiss.

Many fans were quick to accept Sue’s apology, recognising it as a genuine mistake with no malicious intent. One fan responded to her post: “As someone who is misgendered on a regular basis, we get it; mistakes are made,” to which simply responded with the words: “I’m sorry.”
