BBC Breakfast’s Jon Kay fumes ‘don’t blame Carol’ as co-star makes brutal swipe

BBC Breakfast host Jon Kay has jumped to the defence of one of his co-stars after she came under fire from another BBC show.

Jon, 54, returned on Monday (June 17) to present the BBC morning show for viewers as another week kicked off. He was joined on the iconic red sofa by co-star Sally Nugent as they ran through the big stories making the headlines.

During the show, Jon and Sally passed over to fellow morning show Morning Live, presented by Welsh hunk Gethin Jones and Gabby Roslin. The duo themselves gave viewers a taste of what was coming up on their show, which would be following straight after BBC Breakfast.

With a variety of different stories being covered and multitude of guests joining the pair in the Manchester studio, Gethin and Gabby finished by explaining a story on the weather. The item concerned being able to keep plants from being overfed thanks to the long spells of rain the country has been hit by.

A clearly disgruntled Gethin fumed after previewing the segment: “What’s going on with the weather?! It’s absolutely awful!”

Co-host Gabby also expressed her lament at the damp and dreary weather, after it was confirmed that spring was the wettest on record. She explained how it was almost like “monsoon” conditions, bringing about a laugh from her co-stars both on and off-screen.

Cheeky chap Gethin then made a sly joke about who was responsible for the poor weather and took aim at BBC Breakfast weather presenter Carol Kirkwood, who was just about to deliver her latest forecast. He quipped with his Morning Live co-stars: “Don’t blame Carol, it’s not Carol’s fault.”

However, Gethin was seemingly torn with the statement as he continued: “Actually, is it Carol’s fault? No, it’s not her fault.”

Cutting back to the Breakfast studio, Jon fumed at the duo for suggesting the meteorologist was responsible for the poor weather, quickly jumping to her defence. “Don’t blame our Carol, or you’ll have us to deal with!” he exclaimed, as Sally chuckled at Kay’s anger.

But it soon became obvious that the snap was just a quick joke for the pair, as Jon soon clarified: “It’s our job to blame Carol, not yours!” Sally also chimed in, admitting: “It’s never Carol’s fault; but you know she can’t fix the weather, right?”

Nugent continued: “Everyone thinks that she can, but she can’t!” Jon went on to say that Carol’s forecast would be just a few minutes away, and signs were looking good for some warmth to kick in for summer, to wish Sally joked: “So she has fixed it!”

BBC Breakfast airs every day at 6am on BBC One and the BBC iPlayer.
