Kate Garraway has shared a heartbreaking tribute to her husband Derek Draper on a “tough” first Father’s Day since his death.
The GMB presenter was left heartbroken in January when husband Derek sadly passed away aged 56. The former political advisor suffered from serious health complications ever since contracting Covid-19 in 2020.
Since then, Kate has been open about life without Derek – who is also the father to her two children Darcey, 18 and Billy, 14. And on Monday (June 17) Kate took to her Instagram to post a tribute to Derek.

Sharing a heartbreaking photo of her family, Kate told fans she knew it would be a “tough” say, and wrote in the caption: “So yesterday was one of those days the kids & I knew would be tough . #fathersday – the day when everyone wants to celebrate their daddy.
“We started by visiting Derek’s grave early – and talked about all the amazing things we loved about him, the daft things he did to make us laugh and all the things he has given us that we’ll never forget . We have so much to be grateful for.”
She added: “We’re also so grateful to still have my amazing dad in our lives and Derek’s dad too. Brilliant Papa & Grandad . Then thanks to my fab @global family we went to the #capitalsummertimeball – an amazing day of music & summer joy.
“It was sad coming home & not finding Derek waiting to hear “all about it” as he used to say. But so wonderful that we had him at all. I know for so many yesterday would have been a tough day so here’s to getting through and let’s celebrate all the wonderful fathers & father figures & what they gift us everyday . #love #gratitude #letscelebratelife.”
Following her post, mum-of-two Kate was wished well by her fans and showbiz pals. Lorraine Kelly, replied: “Beautiful words and what a gorgeous photo.”
One fan wrote: “Gorgeous photo, memories to treasure. Lots of love and strength to you and your beautiful family.” While someone else added: “Well done Kate. Your strength amazes me.”
Kate married Derek in 2005. He first fell ill with coronavirus in March 2020 and needed round the clock care when he returned home more than a year later.
He died in January aged 56, weeks after suffering a cardiac arrest. “Rest gently and peacefully now Derek, my love, I was so lucky to have you in my life,” Kate said on Instagram after he passed away.
