Kym Marsh has admitted to placing a strange item in her dad’s coffin at his funeral earlier this year.
The Hear’Say singer, 48, was left devastated when her father David passed away at the age of 78 in January. It was revealed after his death that he had been battling prostate cancer, but sadly succumbed to the illness at the beginning of the year.
Speaking to The Sun, Kym bravely opened up on the bizarre item she left inside the coffin. She also talked candidly about how important it is be honest with emotions and how to hold onto memories whilst in the grieving process.

During the interview, she revealed that she had left £5 in the coffin alongside her late dad. She explained that this was a reference to an ongoing joke the duo had before he passed away.
BBC presenter Kym, who also has starred in Coronation Street as no-nonsense Michelle Connor, tried to raise awareness of her dad’s condition where she could. David would often appear on Morning Live, which she hosts, to urge people to spot the signs quickly so that the disease is caught as soon as possible.
However, he gained more notoriety with viewers, when he joked with co-host Gethin Jones about how he would frequently ask daughter Kym to “lend him a fiver”. Ever the butt of the joke, Kym insisted she would never give the fiver to him.
“Shortly after dad passed away, I randomly found a five pound note in my car,” she recalled to the newspaper. “I don’t know if people believe in stuff like this but I don’t know how it got there.
“I put that in the coffin with Dad and I said, ‘There you go, Dad, I’ve given you your fiver now’. Whether you believe in it or not, it’s not wrong to take comfort from something – I found a fiver and I thought, ‘That’s my dad.'”
She added that David still plays a key role in their lives today as he continues to inspire them to do better. Son-in-law Mikey Hoszowskyj decided to run the London Marathon in David’s memory in order to raise vital funds for Prostate Cancer UK – all while carrying a fiver in his pocket.
Doting dad David was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer in 2021 and used his time to raise the profile of the disease. Kym added that thanks to his hard work, David continues to “inspire” her on a daily basis.
In a statement that she wrote following his death in January, Kym penned: “For the first time in my life, I have no words. I love you dad. Always and forever. Rest easy Pops. Goodnight godbless.”
