Chunk from The Goonies unrecognisable as he goes from ‘Belly Shaker to Deal Maker’

Chunk from The Goonies says he’s gone from Belly Shaker to Deal Maker in a new tour.

The former child actor, whose real name is Jeff Cohen, played the iconic role to become one of the most memorable characters of the 80s. That was in no small part to his signature dance move, the ‘truffle shuffle’, which has gone on to become one of the world’s most recognisable GIFs.

However, despite bursting onto the scene with his antics in the 1985 movie, just a few years later Hollywood stopped knocking on his door. When puberty hit, Cohen dropped the puppy fat and cut a much trimmer figure.

There’s lots of quality news coming out of the US.

But in typical Goonies never die attitude, when the acting roles dried up, Cohen went on to become a lawyer.

Now the author and attorney has taken the story of his life on the road. In it he discusses his journey from child star to entertainment attorney representing Oscar winning actors and directors.

In a post to Instagram he wrote about a recent appearance: “Thanks so much to The Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence for inviting me to give my presentation: ‘Chunk Esq.: From Belly Shaker to Deal Maker’ at the gorgeous Duquesne Club for The University of Pittsburgh.

“It was great to hang in the Steel City and I had an absolute blast!”

According to the event organisers, Cohen’s talk uses his story to illustrate methods for navigating extreme career change, utilising principles discussed in his book The Dealmaker’s Ten Commandments.

And fans of his work both old and new were delighted to see him in action, as they descended onto the comments section of his post.

One wrote: “Please tell me you’re working on an auto-bio with the same title.” Another said: “But did they feed you & was it a cheesesteak?”

A third added: “Perfect presentation title!” While a fourth pleaded: “A TED Talk I would pay good money to see!”

Talking previously about his journey out of acting and into the legal profession, Cohen said: “There were basically about four fat kids in town, so every time there was a fat kid role you saw the same people at the audition.

“It was survival of the fattest. But when I hit puberty, it was a career-ender for me. I was transforming from Chunk to hunk and I couldn’t get roles any more.”

After The Goonies, Cohen racked up a few more acting credits including his part in 1987 TV short Popeye and Son, and voicing Grunt in the movie Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School.

His last acting part came in 1991, when he voiced Ward in the TV Movie Perfect Harmony.

Now 49, Cohen is a partner at the Beverly Hills law firm Cohen Gardner LLP. His firm’s work has included negotiating for artists in Black Panther and Crazy Rich Asians as well as the 2017 horror flick Get Out.
