The Office UK fans spot subtle detail you might have missed in ‘best ever’ finale

Fans reckon The Office UK’s Christmas special is the best sitcom ending ever.

And who can blame them? The final episode of the beloved BBC2 mockumentary, which aired on 27 December 2003, delivered some iconic moments which are still being enjoyed today.

The famous scotch egg scene, where Keith (played by the late Ewen MacIntosh) bit down on a scotch egg during a chat with Tim (Martin Freeman) was so funny that it took thirteen takes to finish. The cast could barely get through the scene without laughing.

Another golden moment came when cringey boss David Brent (Ricky Gervais) finally stood up to office bully Chris Finch and told him to “f*** off” at the office Christmas party. It was one of the rare moments of drama in the series, created by Gervais and Stephen Merchant.

But there’s one scene that probably tops them all. The kiss between Tim and Dawn that stuns their co-workers and gives fans the happy ending they were desperate for.

It seemed like it was never going to happen for Tim and Dawn, who had a less-than-romantic fiancé. But just when Tim has given up all hope, she marches back into the room and kisses him while Yazoo’s glorious 1982 hit Only You plays in the background.

Fans of the show have declared it the best ending to a TV show of all time. One viewer on YouTube wrote: “Hands down the best, most satisfying ending of any tv show ever.”

Another agreed: “The perfect ending to a tv series doesn’t exi…”. A third said: “Best sitcom ever and best ending ever!! I’m not going to lie, I teared up when Dawn appeared in the background…”

Others pointed out the sweet reaction of Brent – his smile – after the kiss showing how chuffed he is that the pair got together. It’s the last shot in the series, which had just 12 episodes.

One fan wrote: “I love the expression on the face of David at 2:52. You can see he’s genuinely happy for Tim and Dawn.”

Another penned: “I always liked David’s little look tot eh camera at the end. He is really chuffed for Tim in that moment, none of the usual jealousy or trying to steal the limelight…he is just genuinely happy for someone he considers a mate.”

A user replied to the comment: “Glad you pointed that out. I didn’t notice. Fantastic directing and acting.”

Discussing the finale, Merchant told GQ: “Everyone thought we were cynical, and that the show was bound to bow out in a sad way, but actually, Ricky [Gervais] and I were romantic and sentimental. We just kept it hidden from you.”
