BBC Newsnight’s Emily Maitlis’ dog is ‘terrified’ by an ‘imaginary poltergeist’

Former BBC Newsnight presenter Emily Maitlis says her dog’s been terrified by an “imaginary poltergeist” in her home.

Her scaredy-cat whippet howls endlessly at the invisible fiend in the loft. The News Agents podcast host is even considering moving home because of the phantom dilemma.

She was planning on having a post-election celebratory tipple but the crisis over her spooked mutt has left her whole family sleep-deprived. The desperate presenter, 53, told co-host Jon Sopel: “I still haven’t had my vodka martini.

“I had a splitting headache for 48 hours and then I went home and I thought ‘Right, now is my time’. And the dog, my poor dog Moody, is up every night.”

The anchor appealed to listeners for help in solving the ghoulish riddle. She said: “If we have any dog whisperers my dog Moody has started barking throughout the night at some imaginary poltergeist in our attic.

“I think I might have to move out. He has become the dominant character in the whole house. We’re all terrified of him now.”

One listener replied to her on X: “Have you searched the rafters for bats, birds or other interlopers? Dogs have amazing hearing.”

Maitlis joined Newsnight in 2006 alongside Kirsty Wark before becoming the lead anchor in 2018. She fronted the now infamous Prince Andrew interview where she grilled the royal over his friendship with dead paedophile millionaire Jeffrey Epstein. A Netflix film about the saga was released earlier this year.

Maitlis is played by X Files star Gillian Anderson in Scoop, while Billie Piper appears as producer Sam McAlister. The news stalwart insists she has distanced herself from the production.

She told GQ last year: “I’ve stayed right away from the project, actually. I haven’t seen the script. Gillian Anderson could be playing me as a dipsomaniac, for all I know.” A person with dipsomania has an “uncontrollable craving for alcohol”.
