EastEnders airs double Reiss Colwell twist as Sonia Fowler makes huge discovery

This article contains spoilers for Monday’sEastEnders episode (22nd July 2024), currently available on BBC iPlayer.

EastEnders’ Reiss Colwell (Jonny Freeman) has been a man with the world on his shoulders as he spirals into debt, but it appears his problems have become a lot trickier. The accountant has fallen behind with payments for the care of his wife Debbie who remains in a coma following a stroke.

Reiss also stole his wife’s savings to fund IVF treatment for his girlfriend Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy). But during the latest trip to Walford, Debbie’s care home called Reiss to chase up payments as he tried to buy more time to find the cash.

Meanwhile, Sonia confided in long-term friend Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) and explained she was “terrified” that she will get a negative pregnancy test following her treatment.

Kathy encouraged Sonia to find out if her IVF had worked and to do a pregnancy test. Across the Square, Reiss paid Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) a visit and lied that she had some outstanding bills to pay.

Reiss even blamed Sharon forgetting about the payments due to Keanu Taylor (Danny Taylor) dying. Sharon told Reiss how her former partner Keanu liked him which is why she trusted him with her business accounts.

Reiss backtracked, offering to find a loop hole instead to paying the bill upfront. He then went to see Debbie, confessing his guilt over his behaviour and the mess he had got himself into, made worse by scamming Sharon and lying to Sonia.

The book-keeper told Debbie how he was struggling to sleep and couldn’t look Sonia in the eye. He also explained that the money from the sale of their martial home had run out and he couldn’t pay her care fees.

When he arrived home, Sonia revealed the news that she was expecting a baby, and Reiss’s stress was momentarily eased by their shared joy.

But as his troubles took over once more, Reiss left Sonia upset and deflated when he played down their chances of having a successful pregnancy.

As he tried to make amends with Sonia, he came clean about how much he owed the care home and the fact that they were threatening to move Debbie out.

Sonia was upset by Reiss’s ongoing lies and threated about having enough cash to raise a baby thanks to their growing debt. In an attempt to put things right, Reiss returned to Sharon’s and explained there was no loop hole to get out of paying the tax bill.

He insisted that Sharon transfer £13,500 into the business account as she agreed to get the cash together. But will Reiss’ latest ploy work out?

EastEnders continues to Tuesday (July 23) on BBC One at 7:30pm and iPlayer.
