Corrie viewers were distraught after Paul Foreman delivered a tear-jerking announcement to his family.
In a poignant scene from the episode aired on Monday, (July 22), Vicar Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) arranged a family gathering at No. 5.
During this emotional assembly, Paul (Peter Ash) played a prerecorded message revealing his dire health condition and yearned for Bernie Winter’s (Jane Hazlegrove) support more than ever.
In the sombre recording, he shared: “I’m dying. Soon I will be gone. I want to know that you are all talking. I need you to be together. Please, I’m playing the terminal card, but stop this. We are family.”
Concerned fans took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to express their emotions. One fan wrote: “Seeing Paul’s story on #Corrie and how he is having his hands massaged. Brought a tear to my eye as that’s what I used to do for Dad during his MND. Hands and feet, he used to say it’s nice to move my hands, even though it was me doing it.”, reports the Liverpool Echo.
Another viewer expressed: “#Corrie oh Paul he’s coming to the end.” A third added: “Can’t focus on these heartbreaking Paul scenes.” An additional comment reads : “That was a powerful scene between Paul and his family.”
The revelations come amid tensions within the family, sparked off when it was discovered that police officer Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) was in fact Bernie’s secret son whom she had given up. New to the family, Kit went through adoption and name change to Christopher Green soon after birth.
When Bernie stumbled upon Kit rummaging through his drawers under the guise of a cleaner, he initially denied being adopted. However, it was later confirmed that Bernie had indeed found her long-lost son.
Kit then seemed to target Bernie, dragging her into the police station without cause, much to DS Lisa Swain’s chagrin. The truth about him being Bernie’s biological son eventually surfaced, but he made it clear he wanted no part in her or her family’s life.
Despite this, he appeared to have a change of heart and, to viewers’ frustration, began making life difficult for his biological mother. Amid the grief of losing his adoptive mother, he even managed to turn Bernie’s other children, Paul Foreman and Gemma Winter-Brown, against her.
However, Paul, who is terminally ill with Motor Neurone Disease, rallied his family together with the help of his husband Billy Mayhew. He expressed how much he needed them during his final days, rather than them being at odds with each other.
Paul’s heartfelt plea left the family emotional, and they later enjoyed a group outing at the Rovers.
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
