S Club’s Rachel Stevens opens up on ‘devastating’ loss of Paul Cattermole

S Club’s Rachel Stevens has opened up about the loss of Paul Cattermole – and says his tragic death brought the group even closer together.

Bandmate Paul died suddenly from heart-related issues aged 46 on April 6 last year, as the pop favourites were preparing for their 25th-anniversary tour.

The comeback shows ended up going ahead – minus Paul’s former girlfriend Hannah Spearritt – as a homage to him. Rachel recalled: “It was just devastating… obviously, the tour was happening… but we stopped and took a step back, and we just talked.

“We were there for each other, and really wanted to be mindful of his family, and be respectful… the tour took on a whole different meaning.

“[It] became a really beautiful tribute and celebration of him. It was gorgeous to celebrate him in that way. He was always there. There’d be lots of times where one of us would get emotional, and we’d laugh and [share] memories… that’s all you can do.”

The Don’t Stop Movin’ singer also reflected on the therapy sessions that they had to process their grief. She added: “It was really good. I think talking is the best thing ever, and it can never be a bad thing.”

During a chat with Happy Place’s Fearne Cotton, Rachel touched on her struggle with health anxiety, too.

She said: “My stuff latched onto emetophobia [a fear of feeling sick]… it’s not gone away, I just manage it better.”
