Charli XCX fans concerned as she ‘has bump’ of something suspicious during DJ set

Internet sleuths are suggesting that a video of British pop singer Charli XCX shows the star taking something suspicious.

The controversial clip, which has garnered more than 6million views on X, is taken from a recording of a recent set the I Love It and Von Dutch star performed in Ibiza. In the video, the Cambridge born 31-year-old is handed something small and white by her boyfriend and 1975 drummer George Daniel.

The hyper-pop pioneer then briefly disappears below the DJ booth, before standing up again and returning the white object.

It isn’t at all clear what the object is, but that hasn’t stopped imaginative fans speculating that what Charli is being handed relates in some way to drugs.

One X account with more than 10,000 followers posted the clip with the caption: “Oh she was fr (for real) bumping that I love her,” seemingly suggesting the singer was doing a “bump, which is a slang word for a small amount of drugs, usually cocaine, while also referencing the lyrics to her hit song 365.

Some of Charli’s Angels, as her fans call themselves, were upset by the speculation. “Why is coke such a norm and cool girl drug like… no guys,” commented one fan, receiving hundreds of likes.

Others dismissed the speculation, pointing to a number of the pop star’s lyrics that appear to reference using drugs already.

One post on X, that received more than 18,000 likes on X, read: “Omg people on TikTok are freaking out that Charli XCX does drugs. The first lyric of 365 is ‘bumpin that’ (x8) what did you THINK she was bumping? PURSES????”

Other posts mentioned lyrics such as: “Should we do a little key / should we do a little line,” from 365 and: “I’m goin’ skiing even when the slopes are closed / cos I’m so hot with snow up my nose.”

According to lyrical interpretation website Genius, both lyrics are references to cocaine use.

George’s band The 1975 have also referenced drug use in a number of songs on which he is credited as one of the writers, including Milk (“the straight lines, they unwind you”) and So Far It’s Alright (“doing sniff that you can’t afford”).

Daily Star has contacted a representative for Charli for comment.

It’s been a whirlwind few months for Charli XCX, whose real name is Charlotte Emma Aitchison. Following the release of her album Brat, internet trend setters declared this to be a “Brat summer”.

According to the avant-garde pop sensation, to be Brat is to have “a pack of cigs, a Bic lighter and a strappy white top with no bra”, as she told music podcast Sidetracked.

Even the next potential US president seems to be a fan. Kamala Harris’ campaign HQ changed their X profile to an homage of Brat’s iconic lime-green album cover after Charli herself tweeted: “Kamala IS brat.”

Her album has achieved huge critical success too. American music publication Pitchfork gave it a score of 8.4, and the music critic Anthony Fantano awarded the album a rare 10 out of 10, his eighth ever perfect score.

Brat peaked at No2 on the UK charts, and made it as high as third on the Billboard 100 in the U.S.
