Carol Kirkwood ‘doesn’t care’ about age gap as she dismisses ‘cougar’ term

Carol Kirkwood ‘doesn’t care’ if people make comments on the 13 year age gap between her and her new husband and thinks people have ‘moved on’ from terms like ‘cougar’ and ‘toy boy’.

The 62-year-old said having the same taste, and knowing Scottish pop group the Bay City Rollers, are more important than age with her husband, who is 49 in September.

Speaking to Yours magazine, Kirkwood said: “We’ve moved on from the days when he might be described as my toy boy or me being called a cougar.

“If our ages were the other way around, nobody would ever mention it.

“I’ve had a few comments [about our ages] but I don’t care. We’re happy together and that’s all that matters.

“Also, I think that, as you get older, it matters less. The gap shrinks. If I was 40 and he was 20, it would be a different matter.

“But Steve and I like the same movies, the same music. If I ask him whether he remembers the Bay City Rollers, the answer is yes.”

The Scottish weather presenter married police officer Steve Randall in an ‘intimate and romantic’ wedding just after Christmas and describes it as ‘better’ than her first marriage.

“It was small and intimate and so romantic; I wouldn’t have changed one thing about it. Best thing I ever did.

“And, let me tell you, love is lovelier the second time around. No disrespect to my first husband but this is better.

“It evolved from friendship – always the best way – and blossomed into love. By then, I’d really got to know him,” said Kirkwood.

The Scot, who has presented for BBC Weather for 25 years, was previously married to businessman Jimmy Kirkwood.
