BBC Breakfast’s Charlie Stayt forced to interrupt show over missing warning

BBC Breakfast’s Charlie Stayt was quick to point out a missing warning on this morning’s show (Saturday, August 24).

While presenting alongside Rachel Burden, they kicked off a segment showcasing the incredible work of professional photographer Jimmy Reid.

“Many of us aren’t too keen on getting up close and personal with insects, but one professional photographer has made it his life’s work,” Burden said before viewers got an eyeful of some zoomed-in bug snaps. “It’s incredible isn’t it? Look at the detail!” she exclaimed.

As more critter close-ups popped up, including a snoozing bee, a wasp, and a regal Emperor moth, Stayt chimed in: “Do you think we should have done a warning before this?”.

Burden laughed off the suggestion as even more magnified insect images flashed across the screen. Stayt then commented: “I do think these close-ups are beautiful,” while viewers were treated to a stunning shot of a hoverfly, reports the Manchester Evening News.

“Oh look at that, that’s a Hoverfly,” Burden chimed in. “Which he found in a back garden as well.”

She continued: “These are quite ordinary little bugs and creatures that you’d find in anyone’s back garden but they look quite extraordinary when you see them in that sort of detail don’t they?”.

Stayt’s concern over the lack of warning comes as around 15 per cent of the UK population are believed to have a recognised phobia. However, the exact number who suffer from a phobia of insects, called entomophobia, is unknown.

Scottish photographer Reid has been garnering a lot of attention for his extreme close-ups of typical backyard bugs. His portfolio also includes spiders, although these shots were not aired on BBC Breakfast.

On Reid’s official Facebook page show he proclaims himself as a “Macro photographer specialising in spiders, insects and fish with the odd surprise project thrown in.”
