Mariah Carey had a complicated relationship with her mum, who has sadly passed away.
The 55-year-old singer has announced the heartbreaking news that her mother Patricia and sister Alison have died on the same day. She told fans that her heart was “broken” but she felt “blessed” to spend the last week with her mum before she passed.
She told fans: “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day. I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed.

She concluded: “I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time”. The causes of their deaths are not yet know.
Sadly, Mariah and her mother had a difficult relationship prior to her passing. In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, she opened up about their ups and downs.
Carey wrote: “Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It’s never been only black-and-white – it’s been a whole rainbow of emotions.
She added: “Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment. A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother’s.”
Mariah explained how her therapist had encouraged her to “rename and reframe” her family. She said in the book: “My mother became Pat to me, Morgan my ex-brother and Alison my ex-sister. I had to stop expecting them to one day miraculously become the mommy, big brother and big sister I fantasized about.”
But their tethering, she wrote, had “caused me so much pain and confusion”. However, Mariah and her mother maintained a relationship.
They even recorded a festive duet of O Come All Ye Faithful and Hallelujah Chorus in 2010. Carey told CBS Morning in 2009 that her mum, an opera singer, was the first person who inspired her.
Recalling the moment she became aware of her vocal talent, she said: “Well, my mother tells a story. She said that she was doing Rigoletto, and she kept rehearsing one part over and over and over. And then, she messed up. And I said, “No, it goes like this,” and sang it to her.”
She partly dedicated her memoir to her mother, writing: “And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always.”
