Full Monty icon was fired for ‘inappropriate conduct’ as female crew saw him naked

The Full Monty was a smash hit with fans up and down the country in the late 90s.

The 1997 comedy followed the lives of unemployed steel workers who formed a striptease act to make ends meet. It became such a huge success with fans that Disney+ decided to reboot the film as a TV show for the streaming giants 25 years after the film first hit our screens.

Several members of the cast reunited for the eight-episode limited series. This included Robert Carlyle as Gaz, Mark Addy as Dave, Lesley Sharp as Jean, Paul Barber as Horse, Steve Huison as Lomper, Wim Snape as Nathan and Tom Wilkinson as Gerald.

But what fans may not know is that one noticeable star from the original cast was axed halfway through filming. Actor Hugo Speer – who played Guy in the box office hit – was due to reprise his role in the show.

However, his time on production came to an abrupt end in May 2022 after he was sacked for “inappropriate conduct” while shooting in Manchester. In an interview with Daily Mail one year on, the dad-of-two lifted the lid on what went down while filming.

He claimed that a female runner knocked on his trailer when he was getting changed. Hugo insisted that he asked her to wait “one minute”, but she opened the door anyway and began speaking to him while he was completely naked.

The actor claimed that he hid behind a wardrobe and didn’t understand why she didn’t leave when she realise that he was changing. According to Speer, a few days passed and then a producer pulled him aside and told him: “There have been a couple of complaints about you.”

Speer told the publication: “I’ve never, in 31 years, had a single complaint about my conduct.” The actor claims the producer told him: “You’ve been seen undressed in your trailer.”

After being told that he had “made a few members of the crew feel ‘uncomfortable’”, Speer said he was left “shocked.” Disney+ then conducted a thorough investigation, which also reported that he had walked past an open door of his trailer while nude.

After reviewing the results, Speer’s character was written out of the rest of the series and his contract was terminated. The actor has since revealed to the outlet that he has not worked since his axe.

He said: “It was tragic-comedy, but they didn’t realise how badly affected I was. I went into massive, deep shock. As you can see, I’m still kind of there.

“They’ve taken my job. They’ve taken my reputation. They’ve taken my money. They’ve taken my mental health.” A spokesperson for Disney+ told the Mail at the time: “Last year, we were made aware of allegations of inappropriate conduct by Hugo Speer on the set of The Full Monty.

“As is policy, an independent investigation was launched. Upon its completion, the decision was made to terminate his contract, with immediate effect.”

It comes after an insider told The Sun that Disney+ are in talks about producing a second series. The TV source told the publication: “It looks like Disney+ are considering the go-ahead on a second series of ‘The Full Monty’.

Talks are ongoing about whether it will make it, but everyone felt there was so much promise behind revisiting the story and a few tweaks could make a second series land better.

“Discussions are under way, with some influential people behind the scenes trying their best to make it happen.” Simon Beaufoy, who wrote the movie, recently tole The Sheffield Star that he would be interested in writing another series.

He told the newspaper: “We would be up for another series as would the cast so it’s up to the mysterious powers that be at Disney+. Disney+ were really good partners and we really enjoyed working with them.

“They were really supportive of everything we tried to do so it would be hard to do it with anybody else.” Fans will have to stay tuned to see if Disney+ bosses will produce a second series and whether or not Hugo will return to reprise his role.
