Netflix’s Lucy Letby doc stars experts who believe baby killer ‘may be innocent’

Netflix are working on a documentary about baby killer Lucy Letby.

The streaming platform, along with ITN, are making the show that will reportedly feature experts who doubt her murder conviction. The Mirror also reported that the producers have contacted a “string of experts” who believe Lucy may be innocent.

The publication revealed: “Those approached to take part in the TV documentary include outspoken statistician Richard Gill, who has called the conviction of Britain’s worst mass baby murderer a major miscarriage of justice. A source said: ‘This is sure to be hugely controversial, the show will be watched the world over’.”

“The people at the heart of this story are utterly devastated. Families of those involved in the case will desperately hope this programme treads extremely carefully. Letby has been through the legal system, convicted and imprisoned. There remains a hard core of commentators who insist she was not given a fair trial.”

The Mirror also revealed that an alleged email sent by producers was sent to experts “who believe the former nurse could be innocent”. They claimed the email said: “Lucy’s story is complex and layered and we firmly believe that her defence and point of view must be portrayed.”

“We must provide a full and comprehensive documentary that explores everyone’s point of view, whilst remaining completely impartial.” Although other programmes about Letby’s actions have been released, this will be the first that include people “who say her conviction is unsafe”.

According to The Mirror Dutch statistician Mr Gill was contacted by the show, a man “who has long campaigned for a retrial” and “claims statistical evidence was bogus”. Families of the victims have urged Netflix to take care with such a sensitive topic.

One grieving family spoke to The Mirror and said: “We would like [TV producers] to really think about what they are doing and saying – would they feel comfortable leaving their baby in [Letby’s] care?”

Last August Lucy was sentenced to 14 whole life terms and convicted of killing seven babies while attempting to kill six more. This came after a 10 month long murder trial.
