Gok Wan prepares to ‘marry’ himself as he celebrates turning 50 in unique way

Gok Wan is about to turn 50 and will be celebrating his birthday in an extremely unique way.

The Channel 4 How to Look Good Naked star is throwing a huge party for his big day and revealed he will be “marrying himself”. Gok spoke to Daily Star as he promoted JD Williams’ latest midlife campaign.

Gok told us: “I’m really excited about being able to turn around and say, ‘I’m 50 and I got here’. I’m lucky, I’ve got a great life, I’ve got a great family, great friends, a job that I love, maybe almost too much.

“But I’m kind of gonna ‘marry’ myself, I’m single, I’m not in a relationship and I don’t know whether I’m ever going to get married. It might happen at some point in my life, but it’s definitely not going to happen in the next week.

“So I guess my 50th is a little bit like marrying myself and I’m having a huge party and I’ve got 260 guests coming to a massive party. All of those people are a huge part of who I am as a person, they see me through my good times, and see me through my absolutely terrible times.

“And so in a weird way, I’m kind of marrying myself with them, and celebrating all of those people, because I wouldn’t be where I am without them. And there are going to be some people that I wish that could be there, like my parents but they’re just too elderly now, so it’s going to be a very contemporary birthday/marriage.”

Gok added: “If you think about it if you deconstruct what a wedding is, you are making vows to yourself. You’re also celebrating being together, but you’re also getting excited about the future, and surely, that’s what a birthday is, right?”

On Wednesday (September 3), Gok joined Anna Richardson and Kelle Bryan as they hosted a JD Williams breakfast event to celebrate midlife women, mark the launch of the new AW24 JD Williams collection, and announce its latest sponsorship collaboration with ITV and ITVX’s popular relationship show, My Mum, Your Dad, set to return later this month.

Gok has also been announced as a JD Williams’ brand ambassador and has joined them for a new midlife fashion campaign. The star expressed his thoughts about the societal expectations placed on women as they age and criticised the notion that women are handed a “little black book” of rules to follow once they enter midlife.

Talking about this, the style guru said: “Midlife is 100% the moment you find the confidence to start feeling more confident in your life. I don’t believe women should feel forced to adopt certain behaviours or change their look based on their age.

“Every woman has the right to feel confident in her own skin and to express herself however she chooses. This morning’s event was all about giving women the tools to reclaim their sense of self, feel beautiful in their own skin, and find confidence through their fashion choices.”

“Gok Wan was recently announced as the brand ambassador for fashion brand JD Williams. With his extensive fashion background and expertise, Gok will collaborate closely with the brand to empower midlife women and redefine midlife fashion, emphasising this stage of life as a time for exploration rather than settling. His first project with JD Williams, the official sponsor of the ITV and ITVX relationship show ‘My Mum, Your Dad,’ is the idents campaign, where he styled real midlife women. The show is due to return later this month. JD Williams is committed to designing clothes that accommodate the ever-changing silhouette of midlife women, offering products in sizes 8-32.”
