One crucial thing in Friends changed the course of the series forever.
Production designer John Shaffner recently spoke to Architectural Digest about the intended location for the group’s apartments and revealed that initially, plans were drawn up for Rachel and Monica’s flat that looked completely different to what was used.
Their New York City digs featured an entrance area that was just off the hallway, but Shaffner put his foot down. He spoke to producer Kevin Bright and persuaded: “I think we should have another working space for the performance and don’t you think that ultimately the boys [Joey and Chandler] should live across the hall?”

Eventually, Kevin agreed and the boys were situated across the corridor from their besties. John also revealed another idea that was quickly scrapped – he suggested that the group live on the top floor of the building, with a running joke of the pals huffing while out of breath as they made their way up to the apartments.
However, the crew didn’t go ahead with this and John explained: “It was a moment, we went: ‘Oh, can’t do that. That joke will be too old,’ so we dropped them down a few floors and never talked about it again.”
Shaffner actually based the Friends apartment building on somewhere he had previously lived in Manhattan. Throughout the series, the production designer used his own personal memories and experiences to inspire the Friends set and help it come to life.
He said: “Our world of New York, that we created for 10 years [in the show], was – in a weird kind of way – a soft landing place of New York. We romanticised it. I mean, where else would you leave your apartment door unlocked?”
Fans of the show may not have noticed one minute detail about the pals’ apartments – in season one, the number on the boys’ reads 4 and the girls’ reads 5. Later these numbers were permanently changed, with the boys’ switching to 19 and the girls’ to 20.
