Kate Winslet reveals shock behind-the-scenes detail about Titanic’s iconic door scene

Kate Winslet has let slip some behind-the-scenes truths about the making of the infamous ‘Titanic’ door scene, revealing it didn’t take place in the perilous ocean but a “waist-height” tank.

The famous sequence shows Rose (played by Winslet) surviving atop a piece of debris while her beloved Jack (portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio) remains submerged in the chilling water. However, speaking on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast, she confessed to host Josh Horowitz that it was far from the epic set-up fans imagine.

Winslet exposed the filmmaking reality, saying: “Well that was quite an awkward tank, that one.”

She joked about the logistical ease during filming, saying: “To burst a bubble, it was waist-height, that tank. So first of all, I was regularly like, ‘Ugh, can I just go for a pee,’ and then I’d get up, get off the door, walk to the edge of the tank that was sort of 20 feet away, and I’d literally have to fling my leg over and climb out the tank and go for a pee and then come back and crawl on the door again.”

The A-lister, recently seen in ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, couldn’t help but chuckle over the fact that she might be stirring trouble with film director James Cameron by dishing out these details.

Completing her confessions, Winslet added: “It’s terrible to admit these things … Leo is, I’m afraid, kneeling down on the bottom of the tank. I shouldn’t be saying any of these things. James Cameron’s gonna be ringing me like, ‘Why are you telling them all that? ‘”.

Winslet revealed the final moments of the film were completely re-voiced using Automated Dialogue Replacement due to the overwhelming noise of water from the tank ruining the original audio.

She remarked: “The thing that was amazing about the edges of the tank was that it was an infinity tank, so there was constant water rushing, and you could hear the constant sound of water.”

She also quipped about the notorious door scene, suggesting her co-star “probably got PTSD from the whole thing” as fans still debate whether Jack had enough room to survive on the makeshift raft with Rose.
