Perrie Edwards and fiancé Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain nearly split as star was ‘appalled’

Perrie Edwards said her fiancé Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain was “appalled” by her suggestion about their relationship.

The Little Mix singer suggested they break up before the girl group went on tour with Ariana Grande back in 2016 – an idea he said was “gross”. Perrie opened up about the moment as she spoke about the release of her new single You Go Your Way.

Perrie shot to fame in Little Mix, who appeared on The X Factor in 2011 and uses the name Perrie for her solo career. She is engaged to Alex, who has played for the likes of Liverpool FC and Arsenal and now plays for Turkish side Besiktas.

Perrie has been in a relationship with the midfielder for several years – they confirmed they were dating with an Instagram post in early 2017. They’ve gone from strength to strength and share their son Axel, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Alex was spotted in the audience for a Little Mix gig in 2016. But their romance hit a snag that year when Little Mix were due to go on tour/

Speaking to The Independent last week, Perrie revealed that her new song was inspired by what she told Alex when they first started dating. She said: “When Alex and I first got together, it was very early days but I was obsessed with him.

“We really liked each other, but [Little Mix] were going on tour with Ariana Grande in America for two-and-a-half months, and I just thought this is too fresh to be putting on him now. So I just said, instead of waiting for me, you go your way, I’ll go mine…”

Perrie said that Oxlade-Chamberlain was “appalled” by that idea. “He said ‘Ew, that’s gross. You’re my girlfriend.’

“So my story had a happy ending but people are definitely taking this song in all different ways. Some people are seeing it as the friendships they don’t have anymore… it’s just about parting ways with somebody and that can be a scary thing at first.”

Perrie credited her Alex with helping her confidence. She said: “He’s always got my back, he’ll be like, ‘I’ll do the conversation if you want,’ or ‘I’ll be there for you if you want,’ and I think I kind of needed him to push me a little bit, to be more confident.”

“Perrie spoke earlier this year about how Alex playing in Turkey has impacted their relationship. Speaking on the Johnathan Ross show, Perrie said: “I can’t lie, it is hard.

“When he was playing for Liverpool and based in Manchester, it was so easy to do the back and forth but Turkey is a little bit further and he doesn’t get a lot of time off. I’m trying to launch a solo career whilst having a two year old so it is a lot to juggle but we make it work for the ones we love, don’t we? We’ve never lived together anyway – the whole eight years we’ve been in a relationship; we’ve never actually lived together.”
