Strictly Come Dancing’s Paul Merson dealt crushing blow just hours before live show

Paul Merson’s future on Strictly Come Dancing could be at risk.

The 56-year-old football legend and Sky Sports pundit is the next celebrity to be eliminated from the BBC ballroom, if the latest odds are anything to go by. The bookies at William Hill have him as the favourite to be booted from the show on Sunday (October 13).

Merson is 4/7 in the betting, followed by DIY SOS star Nick Knowles who has been given 15/8 odds of getting the axe. Knowles was forced to miss last week’s show due to an injury in rehearsals.

And blind comedian Chris McCausland is the favourite to win the show. Spokesperson for William Hill, Lee Phelps, said: “Paul Merson’s exit from strictly-come-dancing>Strictly Come Dancing looks to be edging closer and the former Arsenal man leads the elimination market at 4/7 to leave the show this weekend.

“Nick Knowles is next in the betting at 15/8 after missing last week’s show due to injury, though it remains uncertain whether Knowles will return to the ballroom, potentially keeping him safe from elimination once again. Our punters meanwhile seem to love Chris McCausland, and the comedian is now odds-on with us to win the show.”

Paul and Karen have been practicing their Quickstep to I Won’t Dance by Fred Astaire. Last week, they found themselves in the dreaded dance-off against singer Toyah Willcox and her dance partner Neil Jones – but their cha cha to the Magnificent Seven was enough to keep them in.

Willcox said Strictly had been “the best two months of my life”. She told host Tess Daly: “It has been fantastic. I have enjoyed every second. And you [Jones] have been phenomenal, thank you so much.”

Jones praised his dance partner, saying: “She has made me laugh so much, I have never seen someone work so hard – I’m the one asking for breaks every now and then! She just kept going, she wanted to learn so much.

“If you saw her in the hallway she’s been practicing. Everyone’s been telling me have you seen Toyah practising, she’s brilliant and she’s what Strictly is all about, and I’ve loved every moment.”
