Cheers stars decide to ‘make up’ after 30-year feud that still remains a mystery

Cheers was one of America’s most beloved sitcoms that ran throughout most of the 80s and into the 90s.

Over 11 seasons and 275 episodes, audiences were treated to a hilarious insight into the lives and loves of the locals and staff of a Boston bar. Shockingly, the show that made many of its cast members household names was nearly cancelled in its first series due to low ratings for its premier. But it went on to become a massive hit, collecting 28 Primetime Emmy Awards from a record 117 nominations.

The series finale in 1993 was also the most watched single episode of the 90s, with an estimated viewership of 93 million people, or 40% of the US population at the time.

But while it brought laughter to the screens, things weren’t always that happy behind the camera, as revealed by its stars.

On Wednesday’s episode of Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson’s Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast, Danson, 76, was full of remorse as he admitted to falling out with his co-star Kelsey Grammer.

Their argument lasted for decades, and got in the way of their friendship. While not getting specific about the incident itself, Danson admitted to losing his cool with Grammer once.

“This isn’t self-deprecating, but it’s – I feel like I got stuck a little bit with you during the ‘Cheers’ years. I have a memory of getting angry at you once,” he said

To which the 69-year-old responded: “Yeah, you came and told me that one day.” Danson continued: “And it’s stuck in both of our memories.

“But I feel like, f**k, I don’t know. I missed out on the last 30 years of Kelsey Grammer and I feel like it’s my bad, my doing, and I almost feel like apologizing to you.”

And that’s exactly what he immediately went on to do. “I apologize to you. And [to] me that I sat back… I really do apologize,” Danson said.

Grammer gracefully accepted the apology, saying he also wished they’d spent more time together. He added: “My love for you has always been as easy as the day,” Grammer said. “As easy as the sunrise.”

And clearly their decades-long spat is water under the bridge as in September, Grammer told Parade magazine that he wanted to recruit Danson and Shelley Long for the Frasier revival to reprise their roles from the 80s sitcom as Sam Malone and Diane Chambers.

“I think it’s possible. We have some ideas around both of those characters and actors. But, whether or not they’re going to happen, I can’t tell you. I don’t know. But it sure would be great,” he said.
