The most violent, horrific and disturbing horror films have left audiences scarred for decades.
Arguably the most iconic horror is 1973’s The Exorcist. Back in the 70s, the movie’s special effects were like nothing ever seen before which reportedly left audiences deeply horrified.
There are reports that the bathrooms were covered in vomit however, some people have dispelled the rumours as nothing more than impressive marketing to drum up excitement around the horror film. Either way, The Exorcist quickly achieved legendary status and is now among the top horror films ever made as an instant classic.

Terrifier 3 had a similar reaction from filmgoers after it was released on 11 October. The gore-filled flick follows Art the Clown as he stalks the lead character and audiences were reportedly throwing up inside the movie theatre.
David Howard Thorton, the actor who plays the gruesome horror villain, even tweeted: “I will just say that this is the kill [scene] that almost made me vom. That’s a first,” while news outlets reported that “sick bags were provided” to viewers.
The gore proved so intense that France slapped the film with an under-18s ban on Terrifier 3, which was a rating usually reserved for the “most extreme of films” and the first of its kind to be used in almost two decades.
Another 2024 release had audiences’ toes curling in the cinema. The Substance starring Demi Moore is not only one of the most talked about films of the year, but one of the most intrusively sickening and jaw-droppingly repulsive movies ever made.
Elizabeth Sparkle is dropped from her TV fitness gig and in a bid to get back at her bosses, she takes The Substance – a strange green liquid that has dire consequences. A younger model, Sue, breaks free from her spine and splits her entire back open in the process.
The excruciating squelching and harrowing moans, groans and screams used throughout The Substance proved too much for some cinemagoers, many of whom walked right out of the film’s early screenings while others “watched through their hands”.
Another horrifying watch considered one of the most disturbing films of all time is 2009’s The Human Centipede. Up there with The Exorcist, this film is widely regarded as having one of the most disgusting plots of all time.
A deranged surgeon kidnaps three unsuspecting tourists and uses them for his sick project, connecting them mouth to anus to create the self-titled monster. Despite the vile premise, The Human Centipede won several accolades and audiences still talk about the film to this day.
One Reddit user recently wrote: “I thought it was crazy scary and crazy dark, especially the ending […] it was equally disturbing and scary upon each viewing. Only made it 20 minutes into the second one though….”
Lars von Trier’s Antichrist also contains some of the most horrendous scenes ever used in cinema. Willem Dafoe plays He while Charlotte Gainsbourg plays She, a married couple mourning the death of their baby who fell out of a window while they were having sex.
Viewers watch the pair having sex under a tree intertwined with dead bodies, She drilling a hole through He’s leg, She cutting off her own clitoris and smashing a huge block of wood onto He’s penis. Some truly foul stuff.
