‘The Beast was furious after I beat him – he even punched the set,’ says Celeb Chase star

The Chase’s quiz pro Mark Labbett was so “furious” after he lost on air that he punched the ITV set.

The Beast played against ballet dancer Wayne Sleep, Good Morning Britain presenter Charlotte Hawkins, actor Ricky Tomlinson, and Emmerdale star Dominic Brunt back in 2018. But things didn’t go his way…

When talking about the time he won The Chase as he promoted his new memoir Just Different, Wayne Sleep exclusively said: “I want to do The Chase again, I won last time, and I want to get some more money for my charity. They always give you £1,000 or something, so let’s do it.

“The Beast was fuming when I beat him, he punched the scenery as he left. I said to Bradley, ‘Is he always like that?’ and he said ‘he’s furious because he’s been beaten by a ballet boy’. He didn’t speak to us much afterwards either.”

He added: “But I’d like to have Anne the next time I’m on, I like her. So, let’s make it happen.”

Wayne, 76, also opened up about his bond with the late Princess Diana, whom he grew close to when he lived not far from her in the early stages of her marriage. Wayne said: “She felt alone in her pursuit of trying to help people in this country, the homeless and all that sort of thing.

“And it was frowned on, she was called into the Queen. And the Queen said, ‘Don’t ever do that again’. She burst into tears because she really wanted to help people. That’s what she told me. We bonded on the face that we both had to fight our corner, as I was always bullied for being small and gay, quite horrendously over the years.

In his new memoir, Wayne recalls how Diana surprised Charles by dancing to Billy Joel’s “Uptown Girl” with him at a charity event at the Royal Opera House in London in December 1985.

When asked if there are any memories with Diana that he is yet to share, Wayne said: “Most of them are all in the book but, yes, a few things. But there are things I haven’t said in the press so far such as one morning when she came in to rehearse with me, she said ‘Oh, I’ve shown them see them all and they approve’.

“I said, ‘What do you mean? I’ve just danced in front of Will and Harry and they both applauded’. She also sent me very funny birthday cards, which I won’t repeat because they are rude.”

Wayne’s new book Just Different is out now and can be found here.
