Strictly star’s controversial routine faces backlash for breaking show ‘rules’

Strictly Come Dancing viewers have accused one contestant of “breaking” a series rule.

Go Compare actor Wynne Evans danced to Shirley Bassey’s song This Is My Life with his partner Katya Jones and scored 30 points from the judges. To finish off his routine, the opera singer belted out the final part of the song much to the amazement of his co-stars, the judges, the audience and the show’s presenters.

Host Tess Daly was gobsmacked as she turned to Wynne and said: “You blew the hair off the back of my arms there. That was something. We know Wynne can sing, but how was that rumba?”

Anton Du Beke was clearly impressed as he gushed that Evans’ solo was the “best ending to any number I’ve ever seen in my entire life” and that he “loved it”. Despite the glowing reviews, fans of the show were quick to take to social media to call out Wynne’s stunt.

Someone wrote: “Second week in a row Katya danced around a barely moving Wynne and singing is not dancing,” while another person said: “Wynne singing over and over again in a dancing competition really was not required.”

“I’m sorry this isn’t a singing competition. How is it fair that Wynne gets to sing at the end? Always giving him new rules and special treatment,” scathed another BBC viewer. Someone else’s comment read: “Wynne just stood while Katya danced around him and then spent the last 20 seconds singing (when it isn’t a singing show) just wanting more attention.”

“Those scores do NOT match what he did. I repeat last week’s thoughts. What does Wynne have over the BBC/judges?”

However, it wasn’t all negativity as other Strictly fans fawned over the Welsh opera singer’s performance: “Really loved Wynne’s routine and the powerful and inspiring message it gave, not to mention the amazing vocal finish at the end! He should be really proud!”

“Wynne may have sacrificed some dancing for his passion for the song choice. I did enjoy the performance, though.”
