BBC fans threaten to ‘switch to ITV’ over ‘disappointing’ Christmas schedule

BBC One’s Christmas Day TV schedule has been met with a lukewarm response.

The line-up, featuring a blend of children’s films, family entertainment, and the King’s Christmas Broadcast, failed to spark much enthusiasm. Some viewers are even suggesting it might be time to abandon traditional programming.

The Radio Times revealed that the day will commence with animated favourites such as Trolls: Holiday in Harmony, Toy Story 3, Minions: The Rise of Gru, and the television adaptation of Julia Donaldson’s Tiddler.

His Majesty King Charles III is scheduled to deliver his speech at 3pm, followed by holiday editions of The Weakest Link, Strictly Come Dancing and Doctor Who. The evening’s viewing includes festive classics Wallace and Gromit in Vengeance Most Fowl and not one, but two episodes of EastEnders.

Call The Midwife, the final episode of Gavin and Stacey, and Mrs Brown’s Boys round off the night’s schedule. This led some viewers to express their disappointment on social media, with a few stating they’ll “switch over”.

“Still haven’t processed the fact I won’t be able to slide into my traditional food coma snooze within 10 minutes of ‘the BBC One family film after the King/Queen’s Speech’,” one viewer lamented, reports OK!.

Echoing the sentiment, another viewer commented: “No movie after the Kings speech? Guess I’ll have to find one on another channel to fall asleep to after my Xmas lunch….wont be breaking that tradition.”

A nostalgic fan reminisced about past festive TV, stating: “I still miss the 80s’ staple of having Noel Edmonds hosting a live Christmas Day programme at lunchtime, from the top of BT tower, or somewhere. Live Christmas Day telly always felt a bit more special.”

Meanwhile, another viewer expressed dissatisfaction with the BBC’s festive offerings: “If that’s their offering for Christmas Day then we’ll be watching ITV until 9pm,” they grumbled.

The predictability of Christmas TV schedules was noted by other viewers: “The Christmas TV schedules are just getting so predictable. Indiana Jones franchise being shown on Channel 4, Agatha Christie films and ‘Classics’ on BBC 2,”

One user complained. “Must be the ninth consecutive year where the same films keep reappearing in the Xmas schedules! “

Yet Charlotte Moore, Chief Content Officer at the BBC, couldn’t contain her excitement over the holiday line-up, proudly declaring: “No one does Christmas quite like the BBC, and this year we have raised the bar even higher with a cracking line-up that will bring people together across the UK.”
