A Thousand Miles is about a ‘very famous actor’ – but you’ll never find out who

Vanessa Carlton’s iconic noughties hit single A Thousand Miles is about a “famous actor,” but there’s one major reason why fans will never find out who it is

A Thousand Miles has become a cult classic anthem of the noughties

A Thousand Miles is about a well-known celebrity.

In singer Vanessa Carlton’s Vice documentary of the same name, she revealed the meaning behind her classic hit: “The song is about a crush I had on a Juilliard student.”

“I would never talk to this person. I was very shy. I had a better a chance of falling up than ever having a relationship with this person. I can’t say the person’s name because they’re a famous actor and I don’t want to say it.”

Carlton admitted that the person has no idea that A Thousand Miles is about them. She wrote the song aged just 16-years-old while living in New York City in the 90s.

Vanessa wrote the song about someone she fancied, but won’t reveal who

The song was a smash hit and became a cult classic, being memed hundreds of times and used in the iconic noughties flick White Chicks.

When the Vice documentary was released, fans speculated over who the song could be about but Vanessa refused to confess. She told ET: “I’m purposefully…I’m not attaching a gender and it will remain like that. It’s better for everyone if it just remains a mystery.”

Carlton has kept the person’s identity a secret since the song’s release

Vanessa is also bisexual, which could be why she’s refusing to gender the person mentioned in the song as a way to keep their identity hidden. A Thousand Miles is Vanessa’s only song to reach the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 peaking at number five.

The iconic 2002 tune reached number one in Australia, number three in Ireland and top ten in the UK, France, Italy, the Netherlands and New Zealand.

Carlton has branded the song “a combination of reality and fantasy. It’s about a love that so consumes you that you do anything for it.” as “that’s how I felt at that time” of writing.
