Officials at HBO, who created Game of Thrones and its spin-off, House of the Dragon, have revealed another show in the world of Westeros is on the way, and give a teaser on what to expect
The creators of Game of Thrones and spin-off show, House of the Dragon, have announced they’re delving into the world of Westeros yet again – with another spin off show currently in the works.
Following the success of Game of Thrones, which ran for eight years before concluding in 2019, HBO released House of the Dragon, which preceded the show and focused on the famous Targaryen family. Now, another show focusing on the Targaryen’s is coming – but it will focus on a completely different generation with new characters.
HBO’s Head of Drama Francesca Orsi said the series is already in development at the streamer. She revealed: “We have other spin-offs that we’re working on right now, one of which — which I won’t get into — is very promising, and it is still the Targaryen line”.
A recent announcement also confirmed that House of the Dragon was renewed for a third season – with filming expected to begin in March 2025. The release date has not yet been confirmed, but it is expected at some point in 2026.
Actor James Norton, known for his role as Tommy Lee Royce in BBC’s Happy Valley, announced he will be making an appearance in the third series as Ormund Hightower. The character is the nephew of Otto (Rhys Ifans), cousin to Alicent (Olivia Cooke).
An online description added: “He is presently leading the Hightower host in a march on King’s Landing to support his house against Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy).”
Filming is reportedly starting in North Wales, and should span over several months. It should take place between March to October 2025, with a significant portion of the delay attributed to the comprehensive CGI and visual effects needed to render the dragons and large-scale battles convincingly, according to 9metres.com.
Eryri National Park is tipped to feature in crucial battle sequences, while Welsh castles are also expected to contribute to the medieval ambience.
Numerous scenes for the first and second seasons of House of the Dragon were filmed in the picturesque locales across Wales. Executive producer Kevin de la Noy praised the Welsh settings, stating: “It was great to be shooting in Wales with its stunning scenery and landscapes that bring to life our Westeros.”
