Leonardo DiCaprio’s underrated thriller mystery Shutter Island is widely regarded as one of the wildest films in cinema, with a plot twist so wild you’ll be left speechless
Shutter Island has been branded the “craziest” film in Hollywood.
The 2010 thriller mystery stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Teddy Daniels and Mark Ruffalo as his sidekick, alongside Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams and Emily Mortimer. Based on the book of the same name by Dennis Lehane, Shutter Island is an intense psychological rollercoaster that will keep you guessing until the film’s final moments.
Viewers follow two US marshals that are sent to a mental institution on a remote island, tasked with investigating the disappearance of a patient that lives there. However, things are certainly not as they seem as it is revealed that Teddy was the missing patient all along.
Since the film’s release 15 years ago, film fans haven’t stopped talking about the epic plot twist that left audiences reeling. Over on Reddit, movie geeks are still discussing the “twist within a twist” that Hollywood has yet to beat.
Someone said that Shutter Island’s twist “changes the entire movie,” so fans are forced to rewatch after finishing. Another person asked fellow Reddit users for a “plot twist that blew their mind,” and offered Shutter Island as one of their top picks.
Over on YouTube, comments under Shutter Island’s trailer sing similar praise. One person said: “This is the kind of movie you wish you could unsee just to be mind blown again by the plot twist. Two words: Piece of art.”
Others demanded that Leo “should have won an Oscar for this,” while some simply wrote: “Wow,” and another person branded it “the most brilliant move they’d ever seen”.
Another keen fan sad: “The plot twist in this movie is one of the [most] OMG moments in the history of [cinema]!!! Man, Leo nailed it.”
