EastEnders fans witnessed tons of nail-biting drama in the latest episode, but they were left baffled when they were asked to vote for who Denise ends up with next
EastEnders fans have been left complaining after they were given the chance to choose what happens next to a character.
The BBC soap is celebrating 40 years on TV with a week of action-packed episodes. Last night, fans were left shocked as killer Reiss died in a huge inferno that engulfed the Queen Vic, and Walford icon Angie Watts made an explosive return after 37 years.
The hour-long special saw the residents of Walford try to rescue people from the Vic as it went up in flames. The pub exploded when Cindy Beale pushed husband Ian in front of Reiss’ car, causing it to swerve and crash into the building.
However, fans were a little confused when the soap asked them to choose the next chapter in Denise’s love life. Viewers have been given the chance to vote whether she ends up with her husband Jack Branning or her new flame Ravi Gulati, but some believe this is boring compared to the Queen Vic disaster.
Some viewers have dubbed it “the worst storyline in EastEnders history”. “Easily the worst storyline in eastenders history,” one viewer wrote on X. “Denise’s love life doesn’t interest most normal humans.” Another wrote: “Was hoping it would be more of ‘who does she chose to save from dying’ situation but no,” adding a yawning emoji.
A third commented: “I would rather vote for who survives the wreckage rather than who Denise ends up with,” with a laughing emoji. A fourth said: “Who decided on this voting idea? Martins life is hanging on the line. Sonia’s about to have her baby. Phil was just about to end his life. And you want me to vote who gets to sleep with Denise next? #EastEnders.”
Not everyone was complaining, though, as some viewers were excited to take control of Denise’s love life. “Me on my way to vote Ravi as soon as that vote opened,” wrote one as another said: “Vote cast. If Jack doesn’t win, it’s clearly been a miscount….#EastEnders.”
During the fire, Martin Fowler was fighting for his life after he became trapped under a metal beam, while Reiss was killed by a falling bathtub. The episode also featured a surprise cameo from Anita Dobson, who returned as Angie Watts after decades away.
She returned to comfort her daughter Sharon, who was losing consciousness after being trapped in the Queen Vic explosion. Angie appeared as a hallucination and told her not to give up.
“You’re not giving up on us, are you Sharon?” Angie asked her. “Hello, darling! I’ve missed you so much.” As Sharon tells her that she’s cold, Angie replied: “I know baby and I wish I could just put my arms round you and give you a great big hug but it’s not time for us to be together yet darling.”
