Widely regarded as one of the best technical wrestlers of all-time, Benoit has been erased from WWE history, but the his theme tune was this week performed live for the first time since he murdered his wife and son before taking his own life
Chris Benoit’s WWE entrance music has this week been performed live for the first time since the wrestler killed his wife and son in a double murder-suicide.
Canadian rock band Our Lady Peace previously said they had retired their song Whatever from their setlist due to the links to the grappler’s grisly final act.
But they played it on Wednesday on the opening night of their 30th Anniversary Tour in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where Benoit trained to be a wrestler.
Fans were split on the tune, with some saying they should not be honouring Benoit’s legacy in a city so closely associated with him.
But another wrote: “That’s good for them! Should’ve been playing it all along. It’s their song, not a wrestler’s.”
Benoit, widely considered to be one of the finest in-ring performers of all time, murdered his wife Nancy on June 22, 2007, and his seven-year-old son Daniel the next day, before killing himself on June 24.
Since then, his name has been erased from WWE history and his matches are never broadcast on the company’s official programming.
Our Lady Peace’s song Whatever was used as his theme music during his entrance to the ring from 2002-2007, when his popularity was as its peak.
The band said in a 2012 interview that while they hadn’t played the song live for a few years before the horror killings, they had to retire the song altogether because of its links to Benoit.
After a clip of their Calgary gig was shared online, one fan wrote: “I feel like 22 years is enough time passed. It’s their song and it’s their number one song. I only knew the song because of Chris Benoit and I didn’t know the name of the song or artist…but come on. It’s their song. I’m glad they got it back.”
A second agreed, adding: Can we please separate the band and the song from what happened with Chris? We’re in big 2025 to keep saying ‘ew, that’s Benoit’s song, you’re acknowledging his actions’.”
Others weren’t so sure it was the right idea, with one X user arguing: “I’m happy that they are taking the song back so good for them. But for me personally id rather just never hear it again.
“Not saying they shouldn’t do this because they are in their right to do so and there’s nothing wrong with that. I just want no part of it.”
Another said: “Out of all the places to bring it back, it had to be in Calgary…” while someone else argued: “I understand what they are trying to do, but no thanks.”
