The BRIT Awards confirmed who has taken home one of the hotly contested awards for Songwriter Of The Year, as fans insist another artist was ‘robbed’ for not winning
The BRIT Awards 2025 with Mastercard are here again, and feathers have been ruffled after it was revealed early who has won the Songwriter Of The Year award, and fans of a rival singer are unhappy about the result.
Charli xcx has been announced as the winner of the award, in addition to her other nominations for Artist of the Year, Mastercard Album of the Year, Song of the Year with Mastercard, Dance Act and Pop Act.
The at times controversial star has the highest amount of nominations compared to any other artist and it comes after she released her sixth studio album ‘BRAT’ last year.
The BRITs Songwriter of the Year award is said to recognise exceptional songwriting talent. The likes of Ed Sheeran, Kid Harpoon, and RAYE have previously taken the award home.
Talking about Charli’s win, Damian Christian, the Managing Director and President of Promotions at Atlantic Records (part of Warner Music UK) and Chair of the BRIT Committee for 2025 said “Charli has had an undeniable year, taking her experimental brand of electronic and pop from underground raves to the heart of mainstream culture.
“Charli’s songwriting is distinctive, bold and relentlessly innovative, and, having been one of the UK’s leading songwriters for a number of years now, has taken her craft to new heights with her global phenomenon Brat. I’m delighted she has been recognised for this much deserved.”
Despite the high praise, some music fans have been left fuming that the chart-topping star won, feeling that their favourite has been hard done by instead. Many of Sam Fender’s fans feel like he should have won, following the release of his third studio album, ‘People Watching’.
His album also went straight to the top of the album charts, and is on the way to being his most popular record to date. There is a lot to look forward to at this year’s BRIT Awards, with another evening of live music and entertainment.
Comedian Jack Whitehall is hosting again and is sure to deliver more memorable and hilarious moments, and fans will be able to watch performances from JADE, Lola Young, Myles Smith, Sabrina Carpenter – who will be honoured with BRITs Global Success, Sam Fender, Teddy Swims and The Last Dinner Party as well as the award presentations.
Elsewhere, Radio 1 presenter Jack Saunders will be hosting proceedings on the BRIT Awards social media account.
