Here are the most shocking moments at the Oscars, just in time to refresh your memory before this weekends Academy Awards
Ahead of this weekend’s Oscars, Daily Star wanted to do a deep dive into some of the most scandalous moments throughout the years.
This year the event will take place on Sunday, March 2, and it’s already looking like it could lead to an interesting turn of events. Emilia Perez star Karla Sofia Gascon, who became the first-ever transgender best actress nominated for her role, wasn’t present for the annual class photo. The actress has received backlash after racist tweets of hers were discovered following the 13 nominations for the film.
The event marks some of the most celebrated works of cinema and sensational performances given by actors and actresses. But recently, the Oscars have been shrouded in controversy, with more drama taking place at the event itself than on your screens.
However, as we discovered, that is nothing new. Here are the top five most shocking moments at the Oscars through the years:
Will Smith slap
Will Smith surprised us all when he got up on stage and slapped Chris Rock across the face at the 2022 Academy Awards for making an ill received joke about his wife’s shaved head. Jada had previously revealed on her talk show Red Table Talk in 2018 that she had alopecia and had described the sudden hair loss as “terrifying”.
Later on in the night Will Smith took home Best Actor award, for his role in King Richard. Where he portrayed the father of Venus Williams and Serena Williams.
Months later Will addressed the incident in a YouTube video. He said: “I’ve reached out to Chris, and the message that came back is that he is not ready to talk – and when he is, he will reach out. I will say to you, Chris: I apologise to you.
“My behaviour was unacceptable, and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk… I spent the last three months replaying and understanding the nuances and the complexities of what happened in that moment.
“I can say to all of you, there is no part of me that thinks that was the right way to behave at that moment…to handle a feeling of disrespect or insults.”
Wrong winner announced
Mix-ups happen all the time, but it was a shocking surprise to see it happen at the Oscars when Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were handed the wrong envelope. They had announced La La Land as the Winner.
La La Land sees Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone drawn together through a love affair and passion for their work. While it’s a brilliant film, they weren’t meant to win on the night.
Producer Jordan Horowitz was handed an envelope with the correct winner’s name. He then announced that Moonlight was the rightful winner.
Moonlight is a film that looks at the life of a young man called Chiron and shows his coming-of-age story in Miami.
‘In love’ with brother
At the 2000 Oscars, Angelina Jolie won best supporting actress for her role in the film Girl Interrupted. Before the Vanity Fair after-party Angelina was papped locking lips with her brother James Haven. They had also shared a similar kiss at the Golden Globes a few months prior.
During her acceptance speech, Angelina said: “I’m in shock, and I’m so in love with my brother right now. He just held me and said he loved me, and I know he’s so happy for me. And, um, thank you for that.”
Streaker shocker
The sight of the streaker, Robert Opel, running across the stage and throwing up a peace sign was enough to confuse the audience at the 1974 Academy Awards. But to Opel the reason behind his quick naked dash was clear.
He said: It just occurred to me that it might be an educative thing to do. You know, people shouldn’t be ashamed of being nude in public. Besides, it’s a hell of a way to launch a career.
There was speculation that the streaking had been planned and was, in fact, a publicity stunt, due to the host’s quick witted recovery.
However, producer Jack Haley Jr said there was “no way” it could have been planned. He told the New Yorker: “David wouldn’t have stood for that.”
Bribery
Mary Pickford was a founding member of the Academy, but the night before voting she invited the 5 judges over to her Pickfair estate, where they had tea and she swayed them all into voting for her as Best Actress. Her first adult role as Norma Besant in Coquette hadn’t gone down well with critics.
Her bribery meant that protests later ensued. To prevent a situation like this again, the Academy changed its rules so that all members can vote for the winner.
