Viewers were left furious after Michelle Trachtenberg, who died earlier this month, was left out of the Academy Awards tribute, with some calling it “disgusting”
Fans of the late Michelle Trachtenberg were livid after the 2025 Oscars left her out of the In Memoriam segment, despite the actress’ recent passing.
The 39-year-old, known for her roles in Gossip Girl and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, tragically died on February 26. While other stars, including Gene Hackman and Maggie Smith, were honoured with moving tributes, Trachtenberg’s face was noticeably absent from the montage.
Angry fans flocked to X to voice their disappointment. One wrote: “@TheAcademy you forgot Michelle Trachtenberg in your memorial piece.” Another added: “Michelle Trachtenberg not being mentioned in the in memoriam section of the Oscars is upsetting, you are and will remain so so loved and admired Michelle.”
Other fans were equally frustrated, with one saying: “Not adding Michelle Trachtenberg in the ‘In Memoriam’ really p—— me off,” while another fumed: “the Oscars not honouring Michelle Trachtenberg in the memoriam is absolutely disgusting.”
One passionate viewer even questioned: “Waited for Michelle Trachtenberg the entire time—y’all really couldn’t last minute edit her in? Come on now.” Another simply said that Michelle “deserved her flowers.”
The NYPD confirmed Trachtenberg’s death, stating she passed away in her New York City apartment early on February 26. While no foul play is suspected, authorities continue to investigate the cause of death.
Michelle Trachtenberg’s family have refused an autopsy as her official cause of death will remain unknown. On Thursday February 27, a spokesperson for New York’s Office of Chief Medical Examiner explained that, under public health law, families can refuse an autopsy for religious reasons. Unless there is suspicion of foul play or a significant public health concern.
Blake Lively, who played protagonist Serena van der Woodsen on Gossip Girl, wrote a moving tribute on her Instagram story, alongside a picture of her and Michelle’s first scene together.
She shared that the photo was taken the first time she met her co-star and how everything Michelle did would be done with “200%”.
