A 66-year-old man has been formally charged with killing his former hockey star partner, who was a contestant on Finland’s version of hit television show The Traitors
The partner of a Traitors contestant has reportedly been formally charged with his murder.
Janne Puhakka – who was a contestant on the hit BBC show’s spin-off series in Finland – was allegedly shot and killed in October last year. The reality star, who was also known for being an ex-ice hockey player, was found shot dead at his home in Espoo.
The 29-year-old, who was in the second series of The Traitors, had lived at the property near Helsinki with his partner, Rolf Nordmo. Nordmo has now been charged with murder, reported Finland’s Yle News.
Prosecutors have indicated that the alleged crime took place over several days between September 29 and 13 October, 2024, which the publication says suggests they believe veterinarian Nordmo, 66, had planned the shooting for two weeks. They are seeking a life sentence.
Police said previously that Puhakka was shot twice with a hunting gun and that his body was discovered by a friend who went to check on him after he did not respond to messages and answer calls.
Puhakka and Nordmo are thought to have split up in the weeks before the TV star’s death, and Puhakka apparently moved out. Police have indicated that they believed the motive for the killing was a relationship split.
It’s thought Puhakka had gone to his former home to discuss the break-up. When the sports star was found, he had been shot twice in the chest.
According to reports, Nordmo did admit responsibility for Puhakka’s death during the preliminary investigation, but denies murder.
The pair had met in 2014 and ended up getting together, with Puhakka the first Finnish ice hockey player to talk openly about his homosexuality.
He had been doing well on The Traitors, making it all the way to the final of the contest. After his death, TV bosses postponed airing the final episode of the pre-recorded programme.
The trial starts at Western Uusimaa District Court in Espoo on 13 March.
