EXCLUSIVE: The pop legend tapes his mouth shut when he sleeps at night in a bid to protect his voice and prevent dry throat which he says has worked, amid his bid to stay as fit as possible as long as he can.
Sir Tom Jones tapes his mouth shut when he goes to sleep at night. The pop icon is convinced it helps protect his famous voice.
He told the Daily Star Sunday: “I’ve been using something on my nose for years to open it up while I’m asleep, but the problem was that I was still breathing through my mouth. I was getting a dry throat.
“Dry air was causing it, especially when I stayed in hotels with air conditioning. So when I saw the tape for your mouth advertised online, I thought I’d give it a shot.
“I didn’t know if it would stick with my goatee beard, but it worked. I don’t get a dry throat now. It has stopped that.”
Tom admits he looks a bit silly with the tape attached, but he isn’t bothered. He joked: “The thing about getting older is that you don’t have to look good when you go to bed. When you’re younger you have to try and impress somebody, but not now. I wake up and go to the bathroom and look in the mirror and go, ‘Jesus!’”
Tom’s ritual is part of his bid to stay as fit as possible as long as he can. He said: “I still work hard because I enjoy it and I have good health.
“You’ve got to have good health, especially when you get a bit older. If you’re not, you can’t work.”
It comes as a sleep expert has shared a warning about mouth taping after TikTok users are using the hack to help them sleep. While there is limited research on mouth taping specifically, there are a few areas in which mouth taping could benefit your sleep, according to Martin Seeley, Sleep Expert and CEO of mattressnextday.
He said nasal breathing can have benefits, as breathing through your nose helps to warm and humidify the air before it reaches your lungs, which can reduce dryness and irritation in your airways.
Nasal breathing also helps to filter out dust, allergens and other particles that can irritate your respiratory system. However, he also warned mouth breathing can lead to snoring and sleep disturbances.
Martin also warned mouth taping may not be appropriate for everyone – especially people with certain medical conditions, such as sleep apnea or asthma, as it may exacerbate these conditions.
