Severance’s goats ‘explained’ – human clones, hidden messages and gory sacrifice

Ever since the first series of Severance aired back in 2022, fans of the show have been racking their brains trying to figure out what on earth the cute little critters mean…

The Severance goats are a complete enigma.

Ever since fans of the series were first introduced to the farmyard animals back in season one after Helly and Mark stumbled upon a man feeding them milk, many theories about the goats’ purpose have flown around the internet.

Some people believe that they are clones for living people in the Outie world while others think the creatures hint toward something far more sinister.

As always, Reddit is alive with theories about the show and many crazy ones have been thrown out there. One person suggested that Lumon could be “animal testing the severance chips” while another suggested that they are meant to represent the Innies.

User Spiritual_Option7203 wrote: “They don’t actually have any thing to do with the work. The goats symbolize the Innies, no I’m not joking or making a stupid theory.”

“The goats in season one “aren’t ready” they are inexperienced just like the Innies are of the real world, but in season two they are “ready and free” in an open field, just like the Innies are in their new and improved office.”

“The goats and workers have more freedom. They both are still being watched over though, by the black sheep/goat of the group, aka Helly.”

Fans have been mystified by the goats for many years

Some Severance fans are convinced that the goats are simply meaningless, an adorable running joke among the scriptwriters that has gotten out of control.

Over on Reddit, one person wrote: “That’s the point. It’s a moment of surreality, to break the tension between Mark and Helly.”

“It’s also a point of mutual connection for the entire Severance team. It becomes, in the group, a meme, a shared container that then [seeps] into deeper emotional waters.”

Some fans think the goats were written into the show to break tension between Mark and Helly

Severance’s season finale gave us some indication as to what the goats represent. Gwendoline Christie’s character Lorne wheels a kid down a hallway into a room for Mr Dummond.

The goats are offered to Kier as some sort of sacrifice and Drummond questions whether the goat has the right tempers to lead Gemma into the afterlife.

As they prepare to offer the kid to Kier, drawings on the side of the table show people kneeling as a baby goat is sent to death. However, rays of light come out of the goat as it appears to be reborn.

Other theories suggest that the goats are clones of real humans like Gemma

The goats come from the Mammalians Nurturable department, a place that we aren’t told much about. Aside from Helly and Mark taking one short trip there at the start of the season, Severance fans haven’t been given much else to work with.

However, one thing is for sure – the fact that Lumon uses goats as a sacrifice confirms the company has some seriously dark and twisted motives (as if we hadn’t figured that out already….*cough* Cold Harbour anyone?).
