Gavin and Stacey star demanded BBC bosses make spin-off film from beloved series

One Gavin and Stacey star had a bright idea for a film and went to BBC bosses to try and convince them to make a feature length movie based on the iconic sitcom

One Gavin and Stacey star is keen for a spin-off film.

Larry Lamb, who played Mick Shipman, wants to see a film spin-off of the beloved show as he can only play “grandads and dads” nowadays.

The actor revealed he spoke personally to BBC boss Tim Davie and urged him into the project, telling him it would be a big money spinner with millions flocking to the flicks. Larry, 77, said he told the Beeb’s chief: “I don’t know why you don’t take the show, reorganise all the contracts and put it in the cinema.”

“You’d have 35 million people going to see it. You’d make all the money over again.”

Larry said he would be on board for such a film because “it’s about the only thing he can do now,” but the star wasn’t sure if Davie liked the idea.

He added: “Well, he’s the boss of the BBC. You don’t give the game away, do you?”

“From the look on his face it was either: ‘That’s not a bad idea,’ or: ‘I wish these people would stop trying to do my job for me. They can barely do their own.'”

Meanwhile, the actor said that in real life he has become just like his character and is now a bit of a peacemaker. He explained: “In that first audition I’m not sure I totally got who Mick was, but over the years I like to think I’ve become him.”

“Isn’t that amazing? James [Corden] and Ruth [Jones] saw him in me, but it took a while for me to find him inside myself. I’ve taken on board his way of dealing with things.”

“I’m able to accept how other people think even if I don’t agree with it. Isn’t that a brilliant gift to get from a role?”

“I wasn’t always easy to be around, but yeah, I got to 60 and started to let all that inner unhappiness go. You really calm down.”

Larry also revealed he nearly failed to get the part until his partner at the time advised him to carry out the second audition “like you and Pam have loads of great s**,” which helped ensure he “nailed it.”
