James Corden’s filthy Judi Dench one-night stand joke gets cringe crowd response

Gavin and Stacey star James Corden recently made a racy joke about actress Judi Dench while presenting at a star studded awards show, and the quip did not go down well

James Corden’s raunchy joke about Judi Dench did not go down well.

While talking to the audience at the 2025 Breakthrough Prize ceremony, the 46-year-old joked that Dench once had a “one-night stand” with Dr Anthony Fauci, former chief medical advisor.

The comedian made a comment about the 90-year-old actress and told the crowd: “Tonight is the one night that Hollywood and science come together. Other than, of course, that one magical evening where Dr [Anthony] Fauci had a one-night stand with Dame Judi Dench.”

The Daily Mail reported that Corden was faced with a very awkward response as the room fell silent. Cameras also panned over to actress Olivia Wilde who reportedly looked lost for words.

The ceremony, which has been nicknamed the Oscars of Science, honours scientists for their work and was held in an aircraft hangar in Los Angeles.

A number of famous faces were in attendance, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Lizzo, Bill Gates, Rupert Murdoch, Alicia Keys, Zoe Saldaña and Drew Barrymore just to name a few.

Corden’s failed joke is not the first time the Gavin and Stacey has landed in trouble at an awards ceremony. The former talk show host spoke at the amfAR gala back in 2017 and made a quip about Harvey Weinstein which did not go down well.

At the time multiple allegations against Weinstein were emerging, Corden got on stage and said: “It’s been weird this week watching Harvey Weinstein in hot water. Ask any of the women who watched him take a bath, it’s weird.”

He later apologised after facing criticism for the joke and said: “To be clear, sexual assault is no laughing matter.”

Seven years prior, Corden also got into an altercation with Sir Patrick Stewart while presenting the Glamour Women of the Year Awards.

The Star Trek actor criticised Corden and said: “When the presenters are up here and when the recipients are receiving their awards, don’t stand at the back of the stage with your hands in your pockets looking around as though you wished you were anywhere but here.”

However, Corden quipped back that he “couldn’t be more wrong” and said: “If it looked like that, I’m so sorry. But when you come up to present an award, just f****** get on with it.”
