Katy Perry first pop star in space as historic all-female crew prepare for trip

Katy Perry and five other women will make history as the first all-female space crew since the 1960s, as the singer prepares to join Lauren Sanchez on a Blue Origin flight

Katy Perry will be the first pop star to fly to space.

The singer will be blasting off into the cosmos on April 14, joining Blue Origin’s NS-31 sub-orbital spaceflight mission. Back in February, Jeff Bezos’ space venture Blue Origin announced that the Firework singer would be part of an all-female six-person crew making history aboard the New Shepard NS-31 mission.

The event is being orchestrated by journalist Lauren Sanchez, fiancée to Jeff Bezos. The squad venturing with Lauren includes Katy, Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyen, CBS Mornings star Gayle King, and movie producer Kerianne Flynn.

Lauren reckons this space jaunt will “challenge [the crew’s] perspectives of Earth” and “create a lasting impact that will inspire generations”. This marks the 11th manned flight for the New Shepard programme, which offers thrill-seekers a trip to the brink of space.

If you fancy a seat, it’ll set you back a cool £157,029 to £235,544.

Katy and her fellow female astronauts are about to etch their names in the history books as the first all-woman crew since the Soviet Union sent Valentina Tereshkova orbiting solo in 1963.

Fast forward 19 years, and Svetlana Savitskaya followed suit in 1982 and became the second woman in space and the first to venture out on a spacewalk, reports the Mirror.

The trip will be a swift 11-minute ride in an autopilot rocket, including four minutes for passengers like Katy Perry to float about and peer out at the cosmos. The journey will see them soar roughly 65 miles above our planet.

Whilst the Kármán line, which is widely considered the border between Earth’s atmosphere and the vacuum of space, sits snug at 62 miles high, this means that Katy and her fellow adventurers won’t technically be spacefarers.

Chatting with Elle magazine, the pop icon couldn’t contain her glee as she plans to dedicate the space-bound adventure to her daughter Daisy, aged four, hoping to inspire little girls everywhere that science can be totally “glam.”

She was so excited that her first thought post-invitation was: “What am I going to wear?”.

Katy shared: “But seriously, I have wanted to go to space for almost 20 years. I was investigating all of the possible commercial options. Even when Blue Origin was first talking about commercial travel to space, I was like, ‘Sign me up! I’m first in line’.”

Each New Shepard space tourist is limited to a three-pound baggage allowance, and celebs like Lauren Amanda, Gayle King, and Kerianne Flynn have revealed their cosmic carry-ons. Their space-bound treasures range from family photos, an Apollo 12 flag, cuddly toys, to Malaysian island shells.

Katy Perry, on the other hand, hinted she’d pack something alive “to remind us how precious the Earth is,” keeping it mysterious without giving away the details.
