However, streamers were not expecting to start on such a brutal note as the first episode’s storyline has been branded “depressing” and “uncomfortable”.

Common People stars Rashida Jones as Amanda and Chris O’Dowd as Mike, a married couple that receives some devastating news. Amanda discovers she. has a brain tumour and a desperate Mike decides to sign her up to neuroscience company Rivermind.

The organisation is working on revolutionary technology that can remove the affected areas of Amanda’s brain, leaving behind the healthy parts and using a synthetic material to fill in the gaps.

However, thinks take a seriously dark turn when Amanda’s operating system begins to use her voice in the most haunting way. While going about her daily life, she begins reciting adverts out loud and the distressed couple go back to Rivermind.

They’re told that this feature cannot be stopped unless they upgrade their subscription for more money. In a frustrated attempt to help his wife, Mike signs up for a streaming website that damages his body in exchange for money but Amanda grows suicidal due to their helpless situation.

Understandably, fans of the show were left speechless at the bleak storyline and took to social media to share their thoughts.

A shell-shocked viewer wrote: “This episode was incredibly disturbing to me and it’s because it wasn’t even that absurd of a concept. If we actually had technology like that — its hard to say it wouldn’t go down that route.”

Over on Reddit someone else said: “That was depressing, never need to watch that again.”

Someone else agreed: “I haven’t felt this uncomfortable while watching a Black Mirror episode in a loooong time. Wow.”

A third viewer wasn’t taking any chances and asked “if the next episodes are like this as well,” while one person compared it to the iconic Black Mirror episode Fifteen Million Credits.

“It was too bleak to be a favourite but very well done, I thought. Not just about American healthcare but about the sociopathic nature of the disruption/subscription model.”

“Get someone hooked on the new thing, take away alternatives, degrade the experience and demand more money for what you thought you were signed up for in the first place.”
