Savage Garden’s Darren Hayes nearly died after collapsing and smashing his face to pieces

Savage Garden singer Darren Hayes has opened up about a horror accident he was recently involved in, which saw him “lose consciousness” and “nearly lose his life”

Savage Garden’s frontman Darren Hayes has revealed how he nearly died after nasty fall at his home.

The 52 year old Aussie, famed for smash hits like Truly, Madly, Deeply, revealed a selfie showing his battered and bruised face after his jaw was shattered in the incident.

Next to the harrowing snap, Darren shared an X-ray image displaying the metal plates surgeons implanted into his fractured jaw. The singer has been quietly healing from the ordeal over the last month.

Opening up about the incident on social media, he wrote: “I lost consciousness – I fainted shortly after getting out of bed and collapsed 3 times, losing consciousness each time.”

He further disclosed: “The blunt force trauma was so severe it snapped my left jawbone in half. I woke up in a pool of blood, terrible pain in my left side of my head and with 9 teeth shattered.”

In a tribute to the healthcare professionals, he said: “I could have died if I landed in a different position. They scanned for and ruled out heart issues and anything neurological,” reports the Mirror.

Following the mishap, Darren had to endure reconstructive surgery and received a titanium brace to mend his broken jaw. His jaws were then clamped shut for several weeks, all part of the process to guarantee a thorough recovery.

Darren shared: “I am under incredible care. I have an amazing cardiologist and oral surgeon and we are trying to work out how and why I have been fainting. So far my heart is normal, my arteries are normal and I don’t have a brain tumor or anything that could cause the accident.”

He firmly dismissed any rumours that his mishap was due to alcohol or drugs, stating: “No judgement to those who partake but I do not take drugs or drink alcohol – this was a complete shock.

“But we are still investigating. I just wanted my fans to know why I’ll be out of action for quite some time,” he continued.

Darren openly discussed his recovery process, noting that after his jaw heals, he will need to undergo rehabilitation and get his missing teeth replaced.

Further expressing his resilience, he said: “I love you folks. I’m so grateful to be alive and every day I’m getting stronger. I’m almost one month post surgery now and I’m only just starting to feel better. I’m so grateful to my loved ones for coming to my rescue and to the doctors and nurses who have treated me with such care.”

The kindest, most generous and loving man came into my life almost two years ago, like a miracle. While I want to protect our private universe for as long as we can here’s a hilarious muppet picture of us.”

He added: “Thank you Heriberto for loving me and taking such care of me during some of the most challenging times in my life. I loved you the first time ever I saw your face.”
