EXCLUSIVE: The beloved BBC comedy Only Fools and Horses have been voted as the best ever British sitcom, with TV fans saying Del Boy and Rodney’s antics are ‘timeless’
BBC hit comedy Only Fools and Horses is our all-time fave sitcom – beating a host of other classic shows including Fawlty Towers, Friends and Blackadder.
Del Boy and Rodney’s hilarious capers have topped a nationwide poll with more than seven in 10 Brits saying they love the classic TV comedy starring Sir David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst. And nine in 10 telly fans reckon the Peckham pair’s antics are “timeless”, according to the survey of 2,035 UK adults aged 25 or older.
Despite just 12 episodes being made, Fawlty Towers, with John Cleese as Torquay hotelier from hell Basil Fawlty, is the nation’s second favourite with 66% loving the 1970s hit.
Three in five still adore The Good Life.
The show followed Tom and Barbara Good, played by Richard Briers and Felicity Kendal, on their quest for self-sufficiency in Surbiton, south-west London.
Porridge, with Ronnie Barker as lovable lag Norman Stanley Fletcher, and The Vicar of Dibley, with funnywoman Dawn French as the Reverend Geraldine Granger, are also beloved by three fifths of Brits.
Keeping Up Appearances, with Patricia Routledge as snooty Hyacinth Bucket, the ups and downs of Ross, Rachel and co in iconic 1990s series Friends also made the list.
Wartime comedy drama Dad’s Army, historical send-up Blackadder, with Rowan Atkinson as scheming Edmund, and bawdy department store farce Are You Being Served? round off the top 10.
The report by bookies Betway said: “Only Fools and Horses came out on top as Britain’s favourite TV show from the past, regarded positively by 72% of Brits.”
It added: “Friends and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air are the favourite TV shows among younger demographics, both airing in the 1990s.
“Friends in particular continues to be popular among 25 to 34-year-olds, despite the youngest of this age group not even being born when it first aired.”
