Netflix slammed for ‘tasteless’ post seeming to make light of Southport murders

Netflix has been slammed by fans after the streaming platform recently posted a tweet, which offended UK viewers as the “tasteless” message appeared to make light of the 2024 Southport attack

Netflix has landed in hot water after posting an “offensive” tweet.

The streaming platform’s official X/Twitter account recently posted a still from 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, which is making a comeback after 28 years.

They wrote: “This isn’t the first time there’s been violence like this in Southport. I Know What You Did Last Summer is now playing,” which caused outrage from fans as they pointed out the sick link between the film’s location and a recent tragedy in the UK.

The film takes place in Southport, North Carolina, but British viewers pointed out that the post appeared extremely insensitive to the stabbings of 9-year-old Alice da Silva, 7-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe and 6-year-old Bebe King at a Taylor Swift themed dance class in Southport, Merseyside in July 2024.

Netflix’s tweet has since been deleted, but X/Twitter users were quick to slam the account. One person wrote: “A bit tasteless, eh?”

Another said: “Oh my god. This is in extremely bad taste! I can only assume you’re not in the UK and have no idea what evil things happened in Southport just a few months ago! [angry emoji].”

Someone else demanded they “change the caption” while a second person said they “need to have a chat with their UK office about why this needs to be deleted”.

A revamped version of I Know What You Did Last Summer, starring Madelyn Cline, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Lola Tung, Chase Sui Wonders and Tyriq Withers is set to be released this year.

The film’s description reads: “When five friends inadvertently cause a deadly car accident, they cover up their involvement and make a pact to keep it a secret rather than face the consequences.”

“A year later, their past comes back to haunt them and they’re forced to confront a horrifying truth: someone knows what they did last summer…and is hell-bent on revenge.”

“As one by one the friends are stalked by a killer, they discover this has happened before and they turn to two survivors of the legendary Southport Massacre of 1997 for help.”
