Rapper Big Narstie is training to become a Shaolin monk — one of the most disciplined and fit types — but in doing so he almost picked up the very worst injury imaginable
Big Narstie risked picking up a very, well, nasty injury while training to become a warrior Shaolin monk.
In a rather unlikely career move, the beloved British rapper and former TV chat show host is now a bona fide kung fu fighter.
He said: “I’ve always wanted to be a ninja. So, having the means to try and chase that dream and the things it entails, it’s a blessing.
“A lot of it is to do with agility and, obviously, weapons training — bo staff, sword — and learning how to do the splits, backflip, cartwheels (and) roly polies. The kids are well excited that their dad can do some of these things.”
However, the father-of-two almost paid a life-changing price in his bid to be top of the chops.
He winced: “I’m banned from back-flipping. I nearly broke my neck!”
It isn’t easy becoming a Shaolin monk.
Real ones typically train for a significant portion of the day, often most the day and their daily routine includes other activities as well.
They train for seven hours a day, with days off, usually on a Monday and Tuesday. The training schedule includes Kung Fu, Buddhist lessons, and various temple affairs.
Some monks also spend time on physical exercises and combat skills. The training is intense, with a focus on both physical and mental discipline.
Martial arts aside, the 39-year-old is fighting fit these days after putting in the hard graft to improve his health and dropping from a size 5XL to 2XL. He explained: “I’d say, seven, eight years ago, my health wasn’t in the best of conditions. I really just thought, health is wealth.
“I didn’t want to be that person whose got all the material things but no health.
“What’s the point of having money if you can’t use it?”
Now the grime MC — who dropped banger One Time last month has become one of the faces of SlimFast.
He recalled: “I’m a good fit for it because I’ve shown genuine weight loss and gain… I’ve done it the natural old-fashioned way, just hard exercise and being careful with my diet.”
Narstie has joined Kelly Brook and Keisha Buchanan, of Sugababes fame, for the brand’s latest Tasty Tasty Good campaign.
