Sidney from television hit Our Yorkshire Farm is now being homeschooled as he wants to be a farmer, which his mum Amanda Owen has said is the right decision for him
Our Yorkshire Farm star Amanda Owen has admitted that it was “scary” making the decision to homeschool one of her children.
The TV star and farmer – known to viewers as the Yorkshire Shepherdess – has a brood of nine kids with her ex Clive. Their son Sidney, 13, wants to be a farmer when he grows up so they recently made the decision to teach him at home.
Opening up on ITV’s Lorraine, Amanda said that as far as she is concerned, “an education can mean many things”. The decision to homeschool Sidney was also “the right one”, the star added.
Host Lorraine Kelly quizzed Amanda about the decision when she appeared on the ITV programme on Tuesday (29 April), saying it was a “huge commitment”. “Totally is,” Amanda replied.
“Yesterday, I had to actually have words because he had a maths tutor thing, but he also wanted to help Reuben fell a tree. So, it’s like that balance. It’s like, ‘OK what’s the most important thing, what’s the most pressing thing?’
“It’s all about striking the right balance. I mean, nine children, they’re all very individual characters. They’ve all got their different ideas and their different skillsets.”
Amanda said that Sidney was “quite focused”. “He knows what he wants to do and he’s very, very aware of the fact that he needs an education,” she explained.
“But an education can mean many things, and I believe that an education can mean a work ethic, empathy, an ability to be able to turn your hand to anything, and to be able to communicate and to be able to grow up to be a decent human being. I think sometimes that can be really overlooked.
“Sidney is absolutely living his best life, he is enjoying himself. He’s been involved in the farm, he’s been involved with his older brother Reuben, who is his hero with engines.
“And I just feel like, you sometimes have to take a little bit of a step into the unknown. It was a scary prospect, but I think it was the right one.”
Amanda and Clive – who split in 2022 – are also parents to Raven, Reuben, Miles, Edith, Violet, Annas, Clementine and Nancy, who range in age from eight to 24. The family found fame on Our Yorkshire Farm, which followed their adventures on Ravenseat Farm.
Last year they starred in Our Farm Next Door, which documented their work renovating a dilapidated farmhouse. It is now returning for a second series.
