The 2025 Eurovision Song Contest is underway in Switzerland – but fans have been less than impressed with the offerings during the first live semi final tonight (May 13)
Fans were devastated with the first live semi final for the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, with some claiming the show was the ‘worst in history.’
Kicking off with an electronic performance by Iceland which UK hosts Rylan and Scott Mills comparing them to former X Factor stars Jedward. Following this was performances from several countries, including Poland, Slovenia and Ukraine. However, social media critics were quick to slam the first semi final, with the second taking place on Thursday (May 15).
“Ohh Ukraine that was the worst performance in the 70 years history of Eurovision. I cant stop laughing,” wrote on social media fan, in reference to their powerhouse song performed by Ziferblat named Bird of Pray.
Another added: “Ukraine is so bad worst Ukranian entry since 2005,” while a third echoed: “This is one of the worst Ukrainian songs in my opinion. I’d be so surprised if this qualifies.”
Estonian artist Tommy Cash did not escape criticism either. “Tommy Cash son that might genuinely have been the worst song I’ve ever seen performed on the Eurovision stage and I’ve seen Michael Ben David’s I’M,” said a fan.
“Espresso Macchiato might actually take it as worst Eurovision song ever for me,” added a fifth.
Slovenia performed a ballad, but upside down. Confused fans wrote: “I get that he’s singing about his wife who was dying of cancer…. but why is he upside down?”
It appears that fans were behind Scandinavian Jedwards, however, who both donned a silver tracksuit and black sunglasses. “3 down and Iceland’s Jedward were by far the best,” noted a dedicated viewer earlier in the night.
Iceland have only qualified four times in the past decade, making tonight a roaring success as they made it to the final, despite the duo not expecting to make it through.
A fan judged: “The more I listen to this song the more it becomes an earworm for me. The Iceland Equivalent of Jedward this performance was quirky and fun. The staging is great and the song is catchy.”
“So I’m liking RÓA. It’s kind of the Jedward/Scooter/Corrs mashup we never knew we wanted,” someone else penned.
The Eurovision Song Contest is back in full swing, with the 69th edition set to light up the St. Jakobshalle arena in Switzerland, following their triumph at the 2024 contest with Nemo’s song The Code.
Two semi-finals are scheduled for today (May 13) and 15, culminating in the grand final on May 17. The trio of live shows will be hosted by Hazel Brugger and Sandra Studer, with Michelle Hunziker joining the team for the final showdown.
This year sees a total of 37 countries stepping up to the plate, including Montenegro making a comeback after a two-year hiatus. Unfortunately, Moldova had to bow out due to financial constraints.
