Olly Murs cancels more shows after walking off stage as he ‘has to put health first’

Olly Murs has announced he’s had to cancel more concerts after walking off stage during his gig.

The 40-year-old singer shocked fans at his Glasgow gig on Thursday night (May 22) when he told them he was cutting the concert short. The former X Factor star told the crowd he’d lost his voice after six songs and that he “can’t go on”.

The Dance With Me Tonight hitmaker has now revealed that he will no longer be able to play his shows in Manchester and Birmingham. It came just hours before he was due on stage at Manchester’s AO Arena on Friday (May 23) and a day before his show at Birmingham’s bp Pulse Live on Saturday.

Olly said he suffered a respiratory infection and that doctors have ordered him to let his voice rest so that he can recover. He told fans he was “deeply sorry” for pulling out of the shows in a statement posted on Instagram on Friday.

“Never expected to be writing this today [sad emoji],” he began. “To everyone in Glasgow last night, I want to start by saying sorry. What happened last night has never happened to me before and I’m truly gutted and upset about it. In 15years I’ve never had to leave the stage after 30minutes into a show, but my voice was failing me.

He went on: “I was panicking and worrying on what to do which gave me no choice but to address it. The thought of upsetting people and letting you the fans down has hit me hard today. Speaking in front of you last night and seeing people upset was hard to see but from the bottom of my heart I’m sorry but I had to put my health first.

“To everyone in Manchester and Birmingham I’m deeply sorry but I am unfortunately going to have to cancel my shows there this weekend. I have contracted a respiratory infection and have been instructed to go on a strict 48-hour voice rest by the doctor to ensure no further damage to my vocal cords.

“I’ve been having the best time on this tour and I’m so sorry to let my fans down, I’m hoping to be fighting fit in a few days to finish this amazing 15 year celebratory tour with a ban.” Olly explained all fans will be refunded from their direct point of purchase.

Olly was inundated with support from his famous pals and fans. Scouting For Girls frontman Roy Stride wrote: “Ah mate. Get well soon buddy. Worst feeling in the world – nothing you can do.”

Blue’s Duncan James added: “Get well bro. See u in London.” One fan gushed: “I was meant to go tonight, but I’m glad you’ve cancelled so that you can take the time to recover & not do more serious damage.

They added: “I’m happy you’re putting your health first as that’s what matters. You’re human, not a machine, you can’t help it and you need rest Murs. You’ve been working so hard. Your real fans all support you and we’ll see you soon.”

Olly issued a heartfelt apology to the fans at his Glasgow gig on Thursday. In a self-recorded video, he said: “Glasgow, I am so sorry tonight. So sorry that I had to walk off after six songs and cancel the show.

“I have never done this in 15 years. Most of the time, as singers, you can kind of get through it if your voice isn’t 100% but I walked out tonight thinking my voice was great.”

He explained: “I maybe felt a little bit rundown but I didn’t think I couldn’t do the show because I wouldn’t have come out there otherwise. So, to walk off after six songs, I am so sorry. 15 years I have never done this.”

Olly added: “As you can hear from my voice, I was sounding rubbish and it is unfair for you guys to spent all that money to come and see me. You deserve the best show and me being at my best. I am so sorry from the bottom of my heart.”
