Olly Murs left fans in Glasgow shocked and disappointed after he walked off stage and cancelled his concert after just 20 minutes as he told the audience “I can’t go on”
Olly Murs left his fans gobsmacked when he abruptly exited the stage after performing just six songs and did not return.
The 40-year-old pop sensation was in the midst of entertaining a massive Glasgow audience when he unexpectedly decided to cut the concert short.
He had been all set to dazzle the crowd with his smash hits during the second night of a sold-out stint in the city. But, in an unforeseen twist, Olly made a startling announcement following just five numbers. The revelation came right after he belted out ‘Kiss Me Like You Mean It’.
Olly informed his audience: “I can’t go on.”
He explained: “This has never happened to me before but you can hear my voice is going. I want to give you the concert you deserve so I can’t go on. I’m going to come back, but I need to go now.”
The venue fell eerily quiet as the lights were raised. Fans, initially thinking it was a prank from the usually playful Olly, soon realised he was serious about his departure.
Concertgoers, who had shelled out upwards of £57.55 for their tickets, were left scratching their heads as security began herding them towards the exits.
Taking to Instagram later, Olly issued a heartfelt apology. In a self-recorded video, he expressed: “Glasgow, I am so sorry tonight. So sorry that I had to walk off after six songs and cancel the show.
“I have never done this in 15 years. Most of the time, as singers, you can kind of get through it if your voice isn’t 100% but I walked out tonight thinking my voice was great.”
Olly apologised profusely for cutting his performance short, stating: “I maybe felt a little bit rundown but I didn’t think I couldn’t do the show because I wouldn’t have come out there otherwise. So, to walk off after six songs, I am so sorry. 15 years I have never done this.”
He went on to say, “As you can hear from my voice, I was sounding rubbish and it is unfair for you guys to spent all that money to come and see me. You deserve the best show and me being at my best. I am so sorry from the bottom of my heart.”
The singer revealed that he intended to seek medical attention that evening, with upcoming performances scheduled for Manchester on Friday, Birmingham on Saturday, and a sold-out show at London’s O2 Arena on Sunday.
Unfortunately, this was not Olly’s first time cancelling a show at Glasgow’s Hydro arena, having pulled out of supporting Take That at the last minute the previous year. Additionally, he had to cancel two UK gigs the month prior, informing his fans on social media that his Hull and Brighton performances would not proceed due to a nasty stomach bug that had also affected his band and crew.
The singer took to social media to express his regret for disappointing his followers, assuring them that the cancelled Brighton and Hull gigs would be rearranged. He penned: “I hate that I have to write this and really so sorry to let you guys down, but unfortunately, we are having to reschedule our next two shows in Brighton and Hull.
“The gastroenteritis bug I had last night is currently ripping through our band and crew, which makes it impossible to put on a show for you.
“We’ll be taking a break for 48 hours to ensure everyone can be fit and healthy for the remainder of the tour. Thank you for understanding and we’re working hard to bring you news of our rescheduled dates as soon as we can. Love Olly x.”
