TV star and comedy legend Ricky Gervais may be confident performing in front of thousands of people, but he has a crippling fear of going to the doctors
Ricky Gervais is so petrified of visiting the doctor he has carried out potentially deadly surgeries on himself.
The self-confessed hypochondriac stand-up and star of The Office, 63, boasted his procedures have included slicing off a skin tag from his eyelid with scissors.
But his DIY surgery left him in agony and terrified he would catch sepsis from not using medically sterilised tools.
He also hates the dentist so much he thought about drilling into his mouth after breaking a tooth earlier this year.
Ricky admitted about being his own surgeon: “I’ll do anything myself. If there’s a pill or an ointment or anything – then I’ll just do it.
“I’ve never had a surgery. I know everything that you might need surgery for, but can also be done with injections or therapy or stuff.
“I don’t want to ever go under either. I don’t like injections. You know those skin tags you get? I had one on my eyelid and it looked s**t, so I cut it off with a pair of nail scissors.”
Referring to his long-term partner Jane Fallon, 63, Ricky went on: “I was gnawing through it like that with these little nail scissors.
“And I’m bleeding and she said, ‘What did you do?
“I said, I cut it off and she went, ‘Are you mad? You could get sepsis.’”
But Ricky still didn’t visit the doctor and just put “loads of Savlon” on his wound.
He added: “I broke a tooth right after Christmas, so we had to get an emergency dentist.
“If I had a drill, I’d have done it myself.”
Ricky has previously said he is too lazy to visit the doctor and would love to build a hospital on the side of his mansion.
He added: “I wish there was a pill for everything. Honestly, our drugs cabinet is amazing. I’ve got a bunion and I’ve got a little spongy thing I have to put on my toe.
“If I walk too far, it starts to hurt, but I’ll just carry them. I’ll just carry on until I just die.”
Ricky also admitted despite his attitude to going the doctor, he constantly fears his aches and pains are signs of cancer.
He added he’s given up hope on getting medically stronger because he is “slower and aches more”.
Ricky said: “When I walk downstairs, it’s like I’ve got false legs, like pirate legs – just stiff… stiff.
“It just hurts. And I just fall out over the day and then start again the next day.”
